The URI College of Pharmacy is pleased to announce the initiation of a special scholarship in memory of Dr. Tom Kalista, URI College of Pharmacy Faculty member, 2013 graduate of the URI PharmD program, and dear friend. To establish a named fund, we aim to raise $50,000 by June 2025, with all contributions being placed in the College of Pharmacy Scholarship Operating Fund until then. Donations can include multi-year pledges through mid-2029, and a giving link is available at alumni.uri.edu/kalista. If we reach our goal, an endowed scholarship will be created to honor Tom’s legacy for generations; otherwise, funds will be awarded annually starting Fall 2025. This initiative reflects the profound impact Tom had on our community, and we deeply appreciate your support in making it a success. ?? Donate Here ?? https://lnkd.in/emchvf7e

Pharmacists Leading the Fight Against the Opioid Epidemic ?? Led by URI's College of Pharmacy and supported by the Rhode Island Department of Health, the Community First Responder Program is making a powerful impact by distributing free naloxone kits and providing education about the opioid epidemic right where it’s needed most! Headed by Dr. Anita Norton Jacobson, Pharm.D. ('98), clinical professor and director of the program, this initiative reaches people at community events—like farmers markets—offering life-saving medication and fostering conversations that help reduce the stigma surrounding opioid use. Dr. Jacobson emphasizes, “It's like having a fire extinguisher—being prepared can save lives.” To date, the program has distributed over 150,000 naloxone kits, empowering communities to respond to overdoses and save lives! ?? Pharmacy students at URI recently participated in the Senior Health, Wellness, and Fall Risk program as part of their PHP 509 class, Advanced Geriatric and Pediatric Pharmacotherapy, taught by Drs. Erica Estus, Kelly Matson, and Christine Eisenhower! Working with an interdisciplinary team, the students provided medication reviews, assessed potential side effects, and helped seniors better understand their prescriptions. This hands-on experience is shaping the next generation of pharmacists, as they learn to provide holistic, patient-centered care for older adults in our community. ?? ??
