?? What if your city could help shape your wellbeing? That’s the vision behind Blue Zones to help people live longer, healthier and happier lives. Last week, our Principal Fabian De La Espriella, AICP was on the ground along with Dan Burden supporting this effort, one that reimagines Miami Beach as a place where well-being is built into daily life. From walkable neighborhoods to healthier food options and community programs, this initiative aims to make the healthy choice the easy choice for all. Blue Zones projects have helped a growing number of cities across the country boost health outcomes by improving infrastructure, food systems, and overall community well-being. Now, a readiness assessment is underway, as the City of Miami Beach is taking bold steps to join the movement, working alongside local leaders to create a healthier future for residents and visitors alike. Did you know? Most crashes near schools affect our most vulnerable road users: kids walking and biking.?? That’s why we’re contributing to the Broward Safety Action Plan, a bold initiative designed to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries across Broward County. As part of this transformative project, our team is leading the development of an action plan?to improve roadway safety near schools. We’ve analyzed conditions around nearly 300 schools in Broward County to identify roadway safety challenges and opportunities for actionable solutions to protect our most vulnerable road users. Funded through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program, this countywide collaboration brings together the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and Broward County Government. Together, we're applying the Safe System Approach, which prioritizes human safety and recognizes that traffic deaths are preventable. Every step we take brings us closer to the ultimate goal of ZERO traffic deaths and serious injuries. This is about action, not just talk. We’re proud to share that our founding principal, Fabian De La Espriella, AICP, is stepping back from his role as Chair of the APA Florida Chapter Gold Coast Section after three years of service in this capacity. Fabian’s tenure as Chair has been marked by resilience, vision, and dedication—rebuilding section programs in the wake of the pandemic and fostering a stronger, more connected planning community in South Florida. ? Under his leadership, the section hosted numerous successful online and in-person events, spearheaded award programs to recognize outstanding planning projects, and advanced professional development opportunities for our community. Fabian now steps into the role of Immediate Past Chair, passing the baton to Jared Beck, AICP, FRP, the new Section Chair. We’re excited to see Jared continue the section’s incredible momentum and build on the foundation Fabian and the executive board have established over the last years. ?
