A Summer of Progress, A Summer of Impact! Our latest newsletter is out, showcasing some of Urban Tilth's impactful initiatives from July to September. Here are some highlights: ??Rudy Lozito Urban Farming Fellowship: Empowering young adults in West Contra Costa with sustainable farming skills and paid learning opportunities. This includes hands-on experience in sustainable and regenerative farming practices, including organic crop production, soil health management, minimal-till farming, animal husbandry, and more! ??Creek Restoration & Water Conservation: Partnering with American Rivers, The Watershed Project, and Contra Costa County to enhance ecosystems and protect communities from flooding. We're also installing water-saving systems for low-income Richmond homeowners, significantly reducing water consumption and costs. ??Veggie Rx Program: An initiative of Urban Tilth, in partnership with LifeLong Medical Care operating under the Richmond Rising Coalition, that provides fresh, locally grown produce to address food-related health issues and promote climate-friendly diets. ??North Richmond Farm Construction Update: Significant progress with completed structures including a greenhouse, watershed workshop, tool shed, and native plant nursery. We also launched the?Oral History Project, collecting?the first round of oral histories with Local elders for the History Walk Oral History Project. Urban Tilth inspires, hires, and trains local residents to cultivate agriculture, feed our community, and restore relationships to land to build a more sustainable food system, within a just and healthier community. Founded in 2005 to help build a more sustainable, healthy, and just local food system, Urban Tilth has emerged as a local leader, a catalyst drawing together a variety of individual, discrete initiatives into a web of integrated, food- and community-focused efforts. In sum, we farm, feed, forage, teach, train, build community, employ, and give back. We help our community grow our own food; train and employ our own young people as “home grown experts”; teach our local residents about the relationships among food, health, poverty, and justice; and forge partnerships with local small farmers to increase demand for their produce. We use our 7 school and community gardens and small urban farms to teach and employ community members to grow, distribute, cook, and consume thousands of pounds of local produce each year, to create a more equitable and just food system within a healthier and more self-sufficient community.

Another heartwarming reunion at Urban Tilth! ???? Since passing their farm on to us, different members of the Nabeta family have visited the site to check in, offer support, and see our progress. Satoko Nabeta, the family matriarch, returned for the first time and we are happy to report that she was impressed by all the work that has taken place so far! (The area labeled “411 Brookside” in the second picture illustrates the land they passed on to us) The Nabeta family remains an integral part of Urban Tilth’s story as we transform this space while honoring its rich heritage. We’ve also been able to connect the family with artists and historians to help collect, preserve and share the story of Japanese American families catalytic role in agriculture, especially the flower business in North Richmond. Our intention is to expand the planned History Walk installation through the Nabeta Farm properties to share their family’s story of the flower business and internment with visitors so this history, struggles, and contributions are never forgotten. ??????????

CSWST2 is thrilled to have provided landscape architect services for Richmond's first universally accessible garden, which will soon be coming to the Richmond Greenway. This project is a testament to our commitment to inclusive design, ensuring that everyone—regardless of ability—can enjoy the beauty and therapeutic benefits of nature. Working closely with Urban Tilth and gathering valuable input from community members, we’ve designed a garden that will be a sensory-rich, welcoming space for all. The garden will feature accessible pathways, raised beds, and areas for rest and reflection. It’s not just a garden; it’s a community space where people of all abilities can connect, learn, and grow together. Stay tuned for more updates as we bring this vision to life! ??
