Last week we celebrated our steering committees with lunch out at Daddy Z's BBQ! These co-op members have stepped up and served their peers as elected leaders, using their skills and talents to serve the co-op. Across our co-ops, we have a total of 32 steering committee members, with two more co-ops adding steering committees soon, after their first year of operation. Happy Birthday Urban Recipe! On this day, 34 years ago, our first co-op met. Back when we first started, Urban Recipe was supported by volunteers and staff of the Georgia Avenue Church. We operated out of a small pantry and a single, non-commercial refrigerator. Now, we are in a warehouse space, able to provide staples like protein and produce at almost every co-op meeting! In 2024, we served food out of 10 co-op and 14 mobile pantry locations. That was 247 co-op meetings and 147 mobile pantry distributions across the city last year. We focus on sustained, regular, recurring support for families. It is incredible what is possible when people come together to care deeply about one another and our communities. To kick off our 2025 Charity of the Month initiative, TMA is supporting three incredible local charities for January. Urban Recipe, Union Station Homeless Services, and Our Daily Bread are all non-profits focused on community outreach for low-income areas and people experiencing homelessness. Discover more about their missions and how you can get involved: Urban Recipe is a food co-operative in the Atlanta area that aims to fight food insecurity by providing high-quality food to low-income areas. Union Station Homeless Services coordinates homeless services in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley, providing care, interim housing, permanent supportive housing, and more. Our Daily Bread Denton is the only 24/7 low-barrier homelessness care center in Denton County, TX. They provide three meals a day, emergency shelter services, transitional housing, and support services.
