Philadelphia: A City of Black Freedom, Legacy & Power Before America was born, we were here. Before freedom had meaning, we were fighting for it. Before opportunity was promised, we were creating it. On the Underground Railroad, Philadelphia was more than a stop—it was a sanctuary. A place where William Still and other freedom fighters risked everything to help enslaved people escape to new lives. During the Great Migration, Philadelphia became a new home. Black families left the Jim Crow South, chasing dreams of jobs, education, and a better future. They built businesses, churches, and communities that still thrive today. During the Civil Rights Movement, Philadelphia was a battleground for justice. From Cecil B. Moore leading the desegregation of Girard College to activists organizing protests for fair housing and voting rights, Black Philadelphians fought for true equality. The city was home to leaders who understood that the fight for justice wasn’t just happening in the South—it was everywhere. Since 1917, the Urban League of Philadelphia has been right here—continuing that fight. Helping Black Philadelphians find work, build wealth, own homes, and create lasting change. Philadelphia is more than history. It’s a legacy of Black power, progress, and perseverance. And we’re still moving forward. #culturestories #urbanleaguephilly #PhillyBlackHistory #LegacyOfExcellence #undergroundrailroad #greatmigration #CivilRightsMovement

?????? ???????????????? ???????????? ?????????? ????????????: ???????????????? ?????????????? & ???????????????? ?????????? Caroline LeCount & Octavius Catto?were?quite THE?power couple during the Civil War-era in Philadelphia—united by love and a shared mission for justice. ??SHE was a brilliant educator & activist. ??HE was a fearless civil rights leader & strategist. Together, they?fought to desegregate Philly’s public transportation, leading acts of civil disobedience, lobbying lawmakers, and demanding equal rights for Black Philadelphians. But their love story met a tragic turn. On?Election Day 1871, as Catto encouraged Black men to exercise their right to vote, he was?murdered by a white supremacist. His assassination shook the city, and?more than 5,000 mourners honored his sacrifice. But Caroline? She didn’t stop.?She carried their fight forward, ensuring that segregation laws were actually enforced and becoming one of Philly’s first Black female principals. ?? In 2023, Philadelphia?renamed a street in LeCount’s honor, making her the?first Black woman to receive this recognition. ???Earlier this month we honored Octavius Catto and shared about the statue which now stands outside City Hall, ensuring his impact is never forgotten. ??? They fought for?equal access, education, and civil rights, just as we Urban League of Philadelphia fight for?economic empowerment, racial justice, and opportunities for Black-Americans and others in historically underserved and marginalized communities. Their legacy lives on in every?workforce and education program, as well as each advocacy effort?we champion. Drop a ?? if their story inspires you! #CultureStoriesULP #PowerCouple #CarolineLeCount #OctaviusCatto #PhillyBlackHistory #CivilRightsTrailblazers #UrbanLeaguePhilly
