Coral reefs are vibrant centers of life for ocean ecosystems. Did you know they also play an important role in protecting shorelines? Over the past decade, U.S. government and university scientists have shown that coral reefs protect thousands of lives and billions in economic assets each year. They argue that reefs act as natural seawalls and should be preserved and strengthened to maintain economic and planetary benefits. Coral reefs protect millions in property value in places like Hawai’i and Florida and safeguard thousands of lives in low-lying areas like Pacific Island territories. Our first 2025 gathering of the Nashville Sustainability Roundtable took place at MasayaCo! We learned about MasayaCo’s business model, which focuses on reforesting degraded lands and restoring forests to their natural state. They use selective and sustainable harvesting methods to create teak furniture while continuously replanting to maintain healthy, thriving forests. We also got to look at and experience their incredibly beautiful and comfortable furniture during the presentation. Thanks for hosting us, MasayaCo! In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s calls for social justice, we hear a call for environmental justice. Dr. King’s support of the Memphis Sanitation Worker’s Strike in 1968 shows the intersection of social and environmental justice through advocating for safe working conditions and fair pay in a job that is vital for keeping our environment clean. The following historical recounting of the strike illustrates how environmental injustices can touch every part of people’s lives. https://lnkd.in/eTv5vqrj
