I am humbled and honored to be named President of the Board of Urban Bee Lab. The importance of bees to our ecosystem is widely documented, and The Urban Bee Lab asserts that pollinators are the ultimate tie that binds food security, climate change, natural disaster mitigation, and ecological preservation. I am excited to have conversations with many of you in the development space to strategize on how supporting pollinators within development projects will not only be the right thing to do but will likely improve both the experience, the profitability, and the long-term sustainability of the places you create. We're thrilled to announce the publication of a groundbreaking new paper featuring 15 years of beekeeping data and innovation! ?? This research sheds new light on the critical link between native plants, honey bee health, and overwintering survival. See some of the data gathered by Kaitlyn Culbert (intern at MIT Research Science Institute) and the Urban Bee Lab. ?? "Nature's reset: The effect of native and invasive plant forage on honey bee nutrition and survival" utilizes data from our proprietary Bzzz hive management system and HoneyDNA analysis of honey samples from client apiaries across the United States. This groundbreaking research reveals a fascinating connection between the type of plants bees forage on and their overall health, demonstrating a clear link between a higher percentage of native plant forage and increased honeybee colony survival rates. This research is a major step forward in understanding the complex factors impacting bee health. By unlocking the secrets of bee forage, we can develop better strategies to protect these vital pollinators and ensure a thriving future for our ecosystems. Bees are facing a global threat, and we're committed to reversing this trend and ensuring a healthy future for them and all pollinators. ?? The Urban Bee Lab, our affiliated 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is combining research, education, and advocacy to make a difference. Here are some highlights ?? ??Pollinator Blue Zones: Leveraging Best Bees data, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Earth observations, and nationally reported statistics, a comprehensive methodology was developed to illuminate environmental variables that are linked to honey bee prosperity in the New England region of the United States from 2015 to 2018. ?? Pitch For Pollinators: UBL partnered with Roxbury's O'Bryant School to bring real-world data into classrooms for these future community scientists! Their "Pitch for Pollinators" program was a huge success, with students using Best Bees' data for science fair projects and four students receiving $1k thanks to funding from Ocean Spray Cranberries Fund and Hamilton Charitable. ?? Ongoing HoneyDNA Mapping: The UBL is taking data collected from Best Bees honey samples and mapping the results on a global scale, aiming to reveal geographic areas where bees proper based on the diversity of their diet (and identifying "pollinator food deserts"). Witnessing the journey of a young scientist is truly inspiring. Katie Culbert, our brilliant intern from the Research Science Institute (RSI) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, recently appeared on Good Morning America to discuss her dedication to bee research. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and her work is groundbreaking. As Katie's mentor, I've had the privilege of guiding her through a project that is not only close to my heart but also vital for our ecosystem. Bees are more than just pollinators; they are the lifeline of biodiversity, and our research aims to shed light on their critical role in sustainability. I'm thrilled to announce that our BIG data paper, led by Katie and supported by The Best Bees Company and Urban Bee Lab, is now in press. This paper is a testament to the hard work and passion that drives us to protect our environment. It will soon be published in the Journal of Emerging Investigators, Inc., and I can't wait for you all to read it. As Katie embarks on her next adventure at Harvard University this fall, I invite you to follow her progress and the impact she continues to make in the world of sustainability.
