In case you missed it: URI CEO Nathaniel Fields and survivor and former client Hope Dawson Sessoms joined Patricia Robinson on Conversations on The Block (94.7 FM) to discuss the complexities of domestic violence and URI’s efforts to break the cycle of abuse. Through programs like the Relationship Abuse Prevention Program (RAPP), which teaches youth about healthy relationships; People and Animals Living Safely (PALS), which provides safe shelter for survivors and their pets; the Economic Empowerment Program (EEP), which helps survivors achieve financial independence; and the Abusive Partner Intervention Program (APIP), which addresses abusive behaviors, URI is creating pathways to safety, healing, and prevention. Did you know? More than 119,000 NYC students—roughly one in nine—experienced homelessness during the 2022–23 school year, the eighth consecutive year in which more than 100,000 public school students were identified as homeless. The previous school year, NYC students living in shelters dropped out of high school at more than THREE TIMES the rate of their permanently housed peers. One way URI is combatting the tremendous obstacles homeless students face achieving success in school is through our cutting edge Fabrication Lab, which is housed in our Economic Empowerment Center. Homeless students participating in our Fab Lab have achieved a remarkable 100% graduation rate, gaining technological literacy through our workshops and recognizing higher education as a key step toward intergenerational stability. What other resources can help young people experiencing homelessness thrive? #NHYAM #EndYouthHomelessness #hhweek

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is an annual program where people and organizations across the nation unite to draw attention to the staggering issues of hunger and homelessness that plague our country. While 57% of unhoused women said domestic violence was the direct cause of their homelessness, houselessness is also often driven by systemic poverty and the skyrocketing cost of living in cities, leaving many without options for safe and stable housing. In New York City, the primary reason for homelessness is the lack of affordable housing, with eviction, overcrowded living conditions, job loss, and hazardous housing also serving as major triggers. On top of that, the economic abuse that domestic violence victims experience can leave them with ruined credit, eviction records, and a spotty employment history, all of which make it nearly impossible to secure housing. URI's various programs assist individuals and families – including pets – by reducing barriers to shelter and safety, as well as by helping them gain the resources they need to live healthy and independent lives. According to Coalition for the Homeless (@NYHomeless), the primary driver of homelessness in New York City is lack of affordable housing. Surveys conducted with homeless individuals reveal that domestic violence, job loss, overcrowded living situations, and unsafe conditions are often immediate triggers that leave many young people with no place to turn or call their own. At URI, about 65% of those we serve in our shelters are youth, which is why we recognize the urgency around providing the necessary resources and support to prevent and ultimately end youth homelessness. This National Youth Homelessness Awareness Month, let's unite to ensure every young person has access to the safe space they deserve. #NYHAM #EndYouthHomelessness #DomesticViolenceAwareness #SupportSurvivors #BreakTheCycle

Did you know? In Native American and Alaska Native communities, over 84% of women and over 81% of men experience violence in their lifetime, with domestic violence and sexual assault disproportionately affecting Indigenous women. We must remember that honoring Native heritage also means addressing the systemic issues that perpetuate violence in Indigenous communities, including the heartbreaking reality of domestic violence. Here at URI, we are committed to standing with survivors and advocating for stronger protections, resources, and healing for the communities we serve.
