We are beyond elated to finally announce our keynote speaker for the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle’s 23rd Annual Breakfast: ‘Era of Essential Service’! This year’s keynote is Academy award nominated, Emmy nominated, and Golden Globe-winning actor, filmmaker, and activist: Taraji P. Henson! ?? Henson quickly rose to fame after her breakout performance in the critically acclaimed 2005 film ‘Hustle & Flow’. Following an impressive accumulation of acting credits in films, TV and more, Henson wrapped her iconic run as “Cookie Lyon” in Fox’s hit musical drama ‘Empire’ in 2020, which has earned her three Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe award, a Critics Choice award, and three BET awards. While many regard Henson as an accomplished actor, she is also a chart-topping author and seasoned community philanthropist. In October 2016, Henson released her New York Times bestselling novel “Around The Way Girl,” a memoir about her family and friends, her determination to make it to Hollywood, and the importance of living your own truth. Henson, along with her best friend and foundation partner, Tracie Jade, recently co-hosted the Facebook Watch series on mental health called Peace of Mind with Taraji, for which they received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for “Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host.” We couldn’t have asked for someone who embodies our values and our vision more than Ms. Henson. A third day without power didn’t stop me from helping the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle raise $$$ and supporting my Washington STEM team spotlight the Career Connect Washington initiative and the many options, and good salaries, in the building trades.

Huge congratulations to my Sorors Michelle Merriweather and Josalyn P. Ford, MPA and the team at Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle for a record breaking luncheon!! Essential service requires essential support - Girmay Zahilay Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle annual breakfast ??

The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle’s Essential Service breakfast was fantastic! I was so excited to support the Community Marketplace. So much talent and love in one space. So great to start the day empowering the community!

These are certainly interesting times in our community and our country. I'm not talking about the power outage that impacted nearly a million people in Seattle this week due to the bomb cyclone. I'm talking about putting our differences aside and working together to help each other become successful. That's the message I took away from this morning's 23rd Annual Breakfast, hosted by the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle. Two thousand people came out to support the fundraising efforts of the?#ULMS,?which provides essential services like housing, education, workforce development, public health, civic engagement, and financial empowerment. Given this organization's amazing work, it's no surprise that it raised $1.3 million. The special guest was academy-nominated, Emmy-nominated, and Golden Globe-winning Actor, filmmaker, and activist Taraji Henson. I am a big fan of Taraji, so I couldn't wait to hear what she would share with the audience this morning. Taraji talked about the importance of community building, supporting each other to become successful, and not praying about generational mental health issues, hoping someday it will go away but getting help. Making mental health services free and accessible through the Boris Henson Foundation. Thank you for hosting a great event Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle I'll be back next year to support #ULMS
