Black History Spotlight: Alonzo Herndon & Gregory Rutledge Jr. From overcoming slavery to becoming Atlanta’s first Black millionaire, Alonzo Franklin Herndon built an empire through barbering, real estate, and insurance. As the founder of Atlanta Life Insurance Company, he not only secured financial success but also invested in civil rights, education, and Black economic empowerment. His legacy lives on as a beacon of Black excellence and entrepreneurship. Carrying that legacy forward, Gregory Rutledge Jr., founder of the Atlanta Barber Institute, is shaping the future of young professionals through vocational education. A U.S. Army veteran and Master Barber, Rutledge empowers aspiring barbers with skills, training, and pathways to success—proving that overcoming adversity can lead to transformation.
