关于我们
The Urban Farming Initiative invigorates American communities by organizing and coordinating circular food systems in our neighborhoods and cities. We do this by combining growing expertise in raised bed gardens, hoop houses, greenhouses, and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) shipping container growing units along with a digital platform, the Urban Farm Network, that connects producers, consumers, institutional buyers, community leaders, and neighborhood data in a central Virtual Farmer's Market application.

A huge THANK YOU to all the amazing volunteers and the entire UFI team who came out this past Friday for our Walnut Hills community cleanup! With beautiful weather on our side, we made a real impact—just check out the first photo to see how much trash we cleared in just a few hours. A special shoutout to Keep Cincinnati Beautiful for providing the materials we needed to make this happen and operate safely—we couldn’t have done it without you! Beyond the cleanup, this was an incredible opportunity to connect with neighbors, meet those who use the Taft Garden, and take the Walnut Wheels out for a spin. Building relationships like this makes us even more excited for the growing season ahead. Want to be part of more events like this? 192 registrants, 20 speakers, 16 booths, the public launch of our UFI Cincinnati app, and a meaningful dialogue about food and health—that’s what we accomplished at yesterday’s Food As Medicine Mini-Conference! We’re thrilled to share this video from our partners at 1819 Innovation Hub, which perfectly captures the energy of the day. Thank you to their team for co-producing this event and delivering such professional, fast-turnaround content. Our goal was to start the year off with a bang, and we certainly did—even in the cold and ice! This is our prime season for planning and preparation, and next up, we’ll be growing in neighborhoods across Cincinnati. One of our major initiatives kicking off this year is our partnership with the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation, where we’re coordinating all of their community gardens. We’ll have over 150 raised beds producing food for about nine months, generating thousands of pounds of fresh produce that needs a good home. Enter the UFI Cincinnati app, our logistics connector for fresh produce donations. Using the link below, anyone can offer produce for donation, and any registered individual or organization can request to receive that produce at one of our garden distribution points. It’s fresh, local, and accessible—grown right in your neighborhood, for your neighborhood. That’s just our starting point: what blossoms from here—entrepreneurship, community events, kitchen and garden tool libraries—represents the exciting opportunities we’re eager to organize and turn into valuable services. For anyone in Cincinnati looking for a list of local gardens, farms, donations, volunteer opportunities, and more, visit: https://lnkd.in/gEYVxbdZ Don’t be shy—sign up to volunteer at one of our gardens and experience the power of spending even an hour getting your hands dirty alongside friendly neighbors. You’ll be amazed at what that simple act can do for both your physical and mental well-being—and that’s before you even taste the fresh food! We can’t wait to see you in the garden. Let’s grow together!
What an inspiring day at the Food as Medicine Mini-Conference! ?? We had the opportunity to hear from Kevin Mackey, co-founder of the Urban Farming Initiative and visionary behind the Food as Medicine Mini-Conference. Mackey's goal for the event? Education and dialogue, and that’s exactly what we got. Check out the most impactful takeaways below: ?? Food is medicine, and prevention is key. Today, we reinforced the power of what's on our plates, from tackling chronic disease with nutrition to addressing food insecurity. ?? Circular food systems = infinite possibilities: Mackey shared his vision for transforming underutilized spaces into thriving food hubs through his three-step approach: Grow. Process. Distribute. This isn’t just urban farming, it’s rethinking how we build communities and create sustainable change. ?? Fresh perspectives from the next generation: Our NEXT Innovation Scholars delivered tremendous insights into emerging food-as-medicine trends, showcasing how innovation shapes health and nutrition's future. ?? Dynamic discussions from our panelists: An incredible lineup of chefs, dietitians, and industry experts explored how cross-industry collaboration reshapes the relationship between food, health, and community. ?? Waste less, rescue more: Hannah Girdwold of La Soupe, Inc. reminded us that solving big problems starts with recognizing our existing resources. ?? As Mackey said, “Our goal is education first. Once people understand the power of food, meaningful dialogue follows, creating lasting change in our communities.” Thank you to the Urban Farming Initiative, our amazing speakers, and everyone who joined us for this impactful day. Together, we’re redefining the future of food and health! #FoodAsMedicine #UrbanGardening #HealthyCommunities #1819InnovationHub
