Urban Edge is a community development corporation (CDC) that works in partnership with residents, businesses and government institutions committed to developing and sustaining stable, healthy, and diverse communities in Jamaica Plain, Roxbury and surrounding communities in Massachusetts. We accomplish this through the development of high quality, affordable rental and owner housing, assistance to small businesses, homeownership education and lending and the development of educational facilities for youth and families.

Urban Edge is honored to be part of a collaborative effort addressing housing stability in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan, thanks to the generous support from Massachusetts General Hospital. Urban Edge, alongside Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation, Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation, Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation, Madison Park Development Corporation, and WinnCompanies, will use the MGH Community Health Impact Funds (CHIF) award to combine housing stability and eviction prevention models with flexible rental assistance. This initiative aims to mitigate post-COVID rental delinquency and prevent evictions, offering a scalable model for similar organizations. Funding for this program was provided by the Massachusetts General Hospital, part of the Mass General Brigham Healthcare system, Community Health Impact Funds.

The Atrius Health Equity Foundation is dedicated to closing the gap in life expectancy across neighborhoods in Eastern Massachusetts. Medical debt severely impacts families economically and hinders their access to essential care, disproportionately affecting communities of color. With 1 in 8 Massachusetts residents burdened by medical debt, Atrius is dedicating nearly $10 million to alleviate this issue. We are proud to be one of four Financial Opportunity Centers awarded $250,000 to help identify and support those facing medical debt. This week, Senator Elizabeth Warren announced the introduction of the American Housing and Economic Mobility Act, a federal bill that would direct nearly $550 billion to help address the national housing shortage. Standing with Urban Edge and over 30 Massachusetts mayors, Warren emphasized the rapid rise in the cost of housing and need for the government to be a partner with state governments and local municipalities to make a dent in the housing crisis. Urban Edge is proud to stand as a partner with the senator in this robust effort that aims to finance, produce, and/or renovate roughly three million units, which would make a significant impact to the affordable housing market. We thank the senator for taking the time to meet with many mayors and municipality leaders leading up to this announcement, which has helped guide the language in this bill to make sure federal dollars make immediate local impact.
