Last week our CTO, Alden Keefe Sampson, shared lessons learned from six years of operating AI models for forecasting hydrology. Lesson 1/n: AI provided us powerful forecasting capabilities not available through traditional models like rapid input experimentation and uncertainty estimation. We're excited to announce a new cumulative year-over-year chart option in the Lens Analysis tool! This is perfect for tracking vegetation vigor as a proxy for accumulating grassland biomass over the course of a growing season, or for seeing how precipitation accumulates over the course of a water year, among many other use cases. Check out an example chart below with the PRISM precipitation dataset.

Check out this example comparing vegetation vigor on the restored Puente Hills Landfill site. Closed permanently in 2013, this former landfill has been transformed into a thriving regional park with native plants and habitats for birds and other wildlife. Using vegetation vigor data from satellite and aerial sensors like USDA NAIP, Lens makes it easy to track vegetation growth. We can see clearly in the example below how vegetation vigor has increased (in darker greens across the site) between 2009 and 2022. Discover how Lens can support your restoration projects and environmental monitoring!

?? ?? Happy Almost-National Hydropower Day! ?? ?? This Saturday is National Hydropower Day which has our team reflecting on the awesome power of water. With the ever-increasing complexity of our grid, hydropower's storage and flexibility has taken crucial role in providing grid resilience by complementing intermittent renewables like wind and solar. Did you know hydropower provides about 60% of the world’s renewable electricity? It's the world's largest renewable energy source! But extreme weather and droughts challenge hydropower's generation growth. At Upstream Tech we built HydroForecast to empower operators to: ?? Optimize generation and least-cost dispatch ?? Leverage AI to understand the impacts of adverse weather conditions earlier ?? Ensure safe operations National Hydropower Association #HydroDay #HydroPowers?

Yes, we were busy most of the summer discussing the finer points of in-season stone fruit and strawberries. But, hey we still got a lot done! We found Lens featured in a Jeopardy question, launched HydroForecast ST-3, hosted our most attended webinars to-date, and announced an integral partnership. Check out the full recap below ? And we have some sweet upcoming events to boot! Okay not as sweet as the aforementioned stone fruit but the next best thing?
