We organized the second annual Top of Mind Summit: Life Sciences at the Center for Connected Medicine at UPMC this fall, bringing together over 100 thought leaders in health care, biotechnology, government policy, pharma, and the life sciences to discuss and debate existing and emerging challenges and opportunities in the life sciences and health care ecosystems. This year’s Summit centered on the convergence of technological innovation, patient care, and how successful collaborations in the life sciences can catalyze the rapid evolution of new models in health care that enable life changing medicine. Throughout the event, panel discussions highlighted the growing importance of partnerships between health care systems, academia, and industry in driving continued innovation while advancing health care access and equity. Exciting news from the 2024 Magee-Womens Summit!?? Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation?awarded the $1 million Magee Prize to a team led by Ron Buckanovich, MD, PhD, professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and MWRI, for research focused on developing new approaches to diagnose and treat high-risk types of endometrial cancer. “If I can make a difference that will lead to a cure for even a handful of patients, let alone the large numbers we’re hoping to impact, that will be my Super Bowl, my World Series, my Stanley Cup, all combined in one," Dr. Buckanovich said of winning the prestigious prize. Cerevance, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company in the UPMC Enterprises portfolio, has dosed the first patient in ARISE, a Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of solengepras as a potential adjunctive treatment for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Unlike traditional treatments, Solengepras targets specific brain circuits to reduce motor complications and improve non-motor symptoms. This innovative approach could significantly enhance the quality of life for Parkinson’s patients.?
