Must we sacrifice privacy for efficiency? The therapy room has always been a sanctuary of trust — a space where clients reveal what they've hidden from everyone else. This sacred connection is why many therapists hesitate when new tech asks them to press "record." We’re reading an article (link in comments) that highlights a growing tension in our field: ?? Recording sessions can alter what clients are willing to share ?? Yet documentation demands continue to pull therapists away from client care ??? Many "free" AI solutions come with hidden costs to privacy There’s an?alternative approach: AI that transforms brief therapist summaries into complete notes, without requiring recordings. Free solutions that don't monetize your clients' vulnerable moments. This middle path suggests we don't have to choose between protecting therapeutic relationships, managing costs, and reclaiming our evenings. Where do you draw your technology boundaries? Have you found ways to reduce documentation burden while preserving the therapeutic sanctuary? #privacy #medicalscribes #therapistlife #therapistreality #aitherapy

Can AI help clients catch more ??s? Nature Magazine just published a fascinating review of 29 clinical trials involving 9,475 participants testing the efficacy of fully-automated CBT programs for insomnia. In roughly six sessions — and regardless of whether the participant completed the program — the approach effectively reduced insomnia symptoms in a lasting way. But, we’re a long way from firing our therapists and replacing them with apps. Among its findings, the review confirmed what we therapists have long known: that a hybrid care model involving human clinicians will always be far superior to fully-automated programs. New technology = new capabilities = new considerations that can impact the entire experience of care We’re (obviously) big fans of AI in clinical documentation, but it’s not just about speeding up the process. We’re also (obviously) big fans of Ted Faneuff LISW-S, who will be gracing the National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter stage this week to talk about some of these considerations. We’ve left a link to learn more in the comments! ?? #socialwork #nasw #socialworkers #ai #clinicaldocumentation

We just?came across this Medscape article that's making us think about where we're headed in behavioral health tech. The US Congress is considering a bill that would allow AI systems to qualify as "practitioners" who can prescribe medication. Our first thought: "Wait, are we really at that point yet?" Many clinicians already use AI to help with notes or support decision-making processes. But prescribing authority? That's a different level altogether. The article quotes Ravi B. Parikh saying, "The legislation is referring to a piece of AI technology that doesn't exist yet." Which feels like an important point. Are we creating regulations for hypothetical technology rather than responding to validated tools? What struck us most was the comment about how AI can parse data but can't perform a skilled exam: "I don't know how they're going to get around all the things that doctors do, like listening to the chest, feeling for the softness of the abdomen..." Now imagine this in our world of behavioral health — how does AI pick up on subtle changes in affect, hesitations in speech, or the emotional weight behind a patient's words? And then there's the question of therapeutic alliance, which we know is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes in mental health treatment. We’re curious — where do you all stand on this? Is AI prescribing authority an inevitable future we should prepare for? A concerning overreach? Or something in between? And if we do move in this direction, what safeguards would you want to see in place specifically for behavioral health medications? #BehavioralHealth #DigitalHealth #AIinHealthcare #TherapyTech

So, we’re here. We’re in the moment where AI is, clearly, here to stay. But why does it still feel so… scary? These new technologies are promising to ReVoLuTiOnIzE mental health. But, the people at the heart of mental health care — clinicians — are being left behind. Therapists should be trained in applications of AI for behavioral health, even if they aren’t going to use AI tools in their practice. Because the fact is — as scary as it might feel to some of us — clients are already bringing AI into the therapeutic experience. #therapy #mentalhealthcare #ai

“A chatbot is always learning, getting to ‘know’ a patient better. Unlike many not-so-good therapists, who may get stuck on a certain interpretation or theme, AI will continue to modulate and sharpen its opinions as it gorges on its diet of data.” -Sarah Gundle, PsyD The power of AI to learn from your patients is what makes it so powerful. But, it’s also what can make it so dangerous — particularly if data security is an afterthought. #ai #mentalhealth #therapy #privacy #chatgpt #washingtonpost

ICYMI: Therapists don’t *have* to record the session to improve notetaking with AI. We’re always hungry for feedback from the many therapists using Upheal, and we got some delightful morsels around our dictation and text-to-note features. So, we… ?? merged dictation and text-to-note into a streamlined experience ?? hid live transcription (for now) to reduce distractions while in session. ?? rolled out *all* note types and enabled therapists to choose a default …and more! In the same way that mental health care doesn’t happen without therapists, Upheal doesn't happen without therapists. ??
