Viva La Planta! That’s the theme for the Up Elevated Cocktail Club for the month of September. In honor of Hispanic heritage month(since I don’t see any brands, dispos, platforms celebrating our history/culture) Up Elevated Cocktails will be celebrating the rich history between Hispanic/Latino people and our ancestral relationship with the cannabis plant(and all plant medicines that have derived from our native lands), as well as the contributions of our people in this country/industry despite not being allowed equitable access/entry. I’m sure you’ve heard about Nixon’s long hidden assertion that was unsurfaced this week that “Marijuana isn’t particularly dangerous”, but did you also know the term “Marijuana” itself is a racist term given to the plant as part of the War on Drugs to bolster Anti-Mexican prejudice by Harry Anslinger during the 1930’s. We now know that their words and rhetoric were more harmful and dangerous than the plant ever was. Here’s a few more fun facts about Latinos & Cannabis… -The US Latino GDP is $3.7T, yet… -The percentage of ownership for Latinos in the cannabis industry is less than 6%. -Latinos males make up 71% of all federal cannabis sentences in the last 5 years(wait, I thought cannabis was legal?), while… -The US cannabis industry raked in nearly $34B last year, and… -Has already surpassed $43B in 2024. Where am I going with this? Well since you asked, I’m GOING to continue to represent for myself and my people in this industry because we deserve our rightful seat at this table. For nearly a century, we’ve been criminalized for the use of a plant that was only made illegal when the pharmaceutical industry popularized western(oil based) medicines. For centuries prior to this, indigenous people from all over the world used nature and plants to heal their societies. How far we’ve strayed from those times, but we’re on a mission to claim our place in this industry and reshape our narrative with the plant. I’ve enlisted some great friends of mine to showcase their Latino owned small businesses. And we have a world renowned DJ duo from Pilsen, Chicago ready to throw down pa la cultura! Viva La Planta! The Up Elevated Cocktail Club is this Friday night! We’re celebrating the rich history between Hispanic/Latino people and our ancestral relationship with the cannabis plant, and all plant medicines, that’ve derived from our native lands for millennia. In today’s corporate cannabis landscape, Latino ownership is less than 1%, but we know full well that this industry wouldn’t be what it is today without the contributions and sacrifices made by Latinos and other POC who’ve been criminalized for using this plant.
