29th September?was the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste and in my world every day is #IDAFLW. So what better way to celebrate than to speak at the #NationalZeroWasteConference that starts tomorrow !! #IDAFLW brings the world comes together to reflect on one of the most pressing issues of our time: #foodlossandwaste. This day, established by the United Nations, serves as a #calltoaction, aiming to reduce the staggering 1.3 billion tons of #foodwasted globally each year. The UN has recognized that while millions go hungry, vast amounts of food are discarded — leading to unnecessary environmental strain and loss of resources. The UN initiated this observance to address the critical need for sustainable food systems. By #reducingfoodwaste, we can significantly mitigate #climatechange, enhance #foodsecurity, and promote responsible consumption. The fight against #foodloss isn’t just about #reducingwaste — it’s about creating a healthier, more equitable planet. What better way to raise awareness of #foodwastereduction #upcycling and #circularfoodsystems - than taking part in the discussion on "Unique approaches to achieving a #circulareconomy" - alongside Kelly Dalton and Megan Hernandez. The conference is 100% online and is focused on advancing the #zerowaste movement, bringing together leaders, innovators, and advocates from diverse sectors. Each year, over 1/3 of all food produced globally is wasted or lost, contributing to both food insecurity and environmental degradation. Food waste not only wastes resources like water, energy, and labor but also releases harmful greenhouse gases when it ends up in landfills. But here's the good news: We can all take steps to reduce food waste at home and make a meaningful difference in our communities and for our planet! ?? Here’s what you can do to reduce food waste at home: 1-Plan Your Meals & Shop Smart ?? Make a list and stick to it! Avoid impulse buys and only purchase what you know you'll use. This prevents overbuying and wasting food. 2-Store Food Properly ?? Keep perishable items like fruits and vegetables in the right storage environments (e.g., refrigerate or freeze) to extend their shelf life. 3-Use Leftovers Creatively ?? Transform leftovers into new meals—soups, stir-fries, and casseroles are great ways to reduce waste. Get creative with those odds and ends in your fridge! 4-Understand Expiration Dates ?? “Best by” and “use by” dates can be confusing. Most foods are safe to eat beyond these dates, as long as they don’t smell or look spoiled. Trust your senses! 5-Compost What You Can’t Use ?? Composting food scraps is a great way to prevent waste from ending up in landfills and can create rich soil for your garden. 6-Freeze for Later ?? If you notice food nearing its expiration, freeze it! Freezing keeps food fresh for longer, so it doesn’t go to waste. Reducing food waste isn’t just an environmental responsibility—it’s also a way to save money and help make food systems more sustainable. By being mindful of our daily habits, we can make a big impact! ?? Today is the UN International Awareness Day of Food Loss and Waste and this year we’re excited to be launching the nationwide movement to help households across the country to make simple changes that can have a big impact on reducing the amount they throw away, saving money and creating a more sustainable future for Australia. The Great Unwaste follows the completion of research by the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre into Australians' food waste habits, which commenced in 2021. Surprisingly, a third of all food waste in Australia is actually generated in homes – and over half of this food is edible! No one sets out to waste food, and our research shows that 76% of Australians are looking for ways to reduce food waste at home - so we’re here to help. Currently, Australian households throw out almost 2.5 million tonnes of food each year, and over half of the food wasted is edible - the equivalent of 7.7 million meals of perfectly good food every single day. This waste not only impacts our environment but also represents a significant financial cost, with the average Australian household spending around $2,500 annually on food that doesn't make it to the kitchen table. This highly anticipated campaign answers the call from industry, all levels of government, and the not-for-profit sector to have consistent, evidence-based, positive and solutions-focused messaging that allows everyone to be united in helping Australians to reduce food waste. The Great Unwaste will provide practical solutions for everyday Australians, with positive, easy and relatable messaging.
