South Africa’s assumption of the G20 Presidency comes at an opportune moment to alter the relationship between credit rating agencies and heavily-indebted developing countries, argues Dr. Daniel Cash in a recent blog: https://lnkd.in/eFPY7KH8

At this year’s UN Commission on the Status of Women (#CSW69), conversations are centred on addressing the inequalities, violence and discrimination women face worldwide. UNU-CPR is focusing on why #genderdata is crucial for equitable development. Nicole Goldin, PhD, Head of Equitable Development at UNU-CPR, met with Krista Jones Baptista, Executive Director of Data2X, United Nations Foundation to discuss how gender data can uncover systemic inequalities and inform policies that drive women's empowerment and development.

Fascinating Atlantic Council panel on how women’s economic empowerment can drive prosperity, security and more ! The data is clear that good laws, policies and investments in hard/soft skills can yield a bigger ROI which opens markets, yet there is still so much to do. Thanks to Nicole Goldin, PhD for highlighting issues such as care infrastructure, DRM and safety can make such a difference (see #cleancookstoves which reduce the need for women to go into conflict zones to collect cooking wood or charcoal, among other things). Not just the right thing to do, but a prime example of how the US and world can do well by doing good as Kate Warren helped draw out! Neartú Global is committed to driving the data on these issues further, unlocking sources of capital with our local partners, and helping country’s modernize policies to catalyze and incentivize the virtuous circle which can be found here if one looks hard enough.

To adapt to the recent wave in development aid cuts from countries like the US, UK and France, Dr. Nicole Goldin, PhD Goldin argues that global leaders should look in three main directions: look across themselves and each other, look within and look to the multipliers. These directions, she argues, are already reflected at the United Nations, in the Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact. They must also continue to be reinforced, advanced and implemented, she argues, through financial processes happening this year, including the?Fourth Financing for Development?(FfD4). The United Nations is uniquely placed to build credit rating capacity-building for the Global South, by convening the international community on issues of critical global importance. In a recent blog, Dr. Daniel Cash argues that the UN has two organs already well-placed to take on this role: the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD). A “paradigm pivot” in how countries and institutions in (and between) the Global South and Global North respond to recent cuts in development aid is needed. Dr. Nicole Goldin, PhD argues that leaders and their partners should prioritize looking in three directions in doing so: ?? Look across themselves and each other: Lean into whole-of-government efforts to recommit to cooperation, rebuild trust and avoid coordination failure. ?? Look within: Support a jobs agenda and strengthen financial systems and services to increase economic participation and productivity. ?? Look to the multipliers: Invest and innovate in what we know works – from technology and data to localization – to multiply development effectiveness, equity and impact. Find out more about each direction: https://lnkd.in/eXp2jSNU
