How Do You Know What You Don’t Know? (And When AI is Wrong?) AI is everywhere—helping businesses make decisions, analyzing risk, even tracking our health. But here’s the tricky part: How do you know when AI is leading you astray? Because let’s be real—AI doesn’t know things the way we do. It recognizes patterns, predicts probabilities, and generates outputs based on data. But it doesn’t truly understand context, nuance, or consequences. So how do you spot when AI might be confidently wrong? Here’s my simple approach: 1?? Develop a Gut Check for Reality You don’t need to be an expert in everything, but you do need a baseline understanding. If an AI-generated insight feels off—pause. If it contradicts what you know, don’t dismiss your instincts. That’s a flag to dig deeper. 2?? Cross-Check, Cross-Check, Cross-Check AI is a fantastic assistant, but it can hallucinate (yes, that’s the actual term). Before acting on AI-driven insights: ? Compare results with trusted sources. ? Ask follow-up questions to test for consistency. ? Run it by human experts or your own experience. 3?? Watch for Oversimplifications AI loves to make things sound neat and tidy. But complex problems don’t always have simple answers. If something seems too cut-and-dry, ask: What assumptions is AI making? What context is missing? Would a real expert explain it this way? 4?? Know What AI is (and Isn't) Good At AI is amazing at: ? Crunching numbers, spotting trends, summarizing data ? Automating tasks, optimizing processes ? Generating ideas, providing multiple options AI struggles with: ? Ethical and moral decision-making ? Deep emotional intelligence ? Creativity beyond what’s already in its data If AI is making a judgment call on something human-centric, take it with a grain of salt. 5?? Test in the Real World Theory is nice, but reality is the ultimate filter. Before rolling out an AI-driven strategy, run a small experiment. Does the prediction hold up? Does the recommendation work in practice? AI insights should always be stress-tested with real-world application. Final Thought: AI is a Tool—You're the Decision-Maker AI can be a game-changer in business and life—but it’s not infallible. The professionals who succeed aren’t the ones who blindly trust AI, but the ones who know when to trust it, when to challenge it, and when to rely on their own judgment. The holidays can bring about a mix of emotions, especially when stress and grief are added to the equation. Coping with overwhelming feelings can be a challenge. A few years ago, when I lost my father, I experienced a depth of grief that seemed insurmountable. The journey out of that grief hole was arduous, and I can personally attest to its difficulty.
