For Women’s Week we asked you: What percentage of businesses in the DMV are owned by women???? The majority of responses estimated ONLY 20-40%… But the actual figure? Over 40%! A whopping 47.4%, to be exact! ???? That means nearly HALF of businesses in the DMV are owned by women. But, why doesn’t the ecosystem reflect that? The reality is, the playing field is still far from equal. While this statistic might seem like progress, there’s a crucial issue: Ownership doesn’t always translate to opportunity... and that’s the gap we need to close! You might ask, Why does this matter? Women-led businesses help drive revenue, create jobs, and bring fresh perspectives to a saturated market. Yet, they often face higher scrutiny, receive less funding, hold fewer leadership roles, and face greater barriers compared to their male counterparts. That’s why intentional support is extremely important! International Women’s Day has passed, but our support for women in business shouldn’t fade with the hashtags. Equity isn’t a one-day conversation, it’s an everyday effort! A thriving economy is one where women don’t just own businesses, but one where they have the freedom to grow and succeed without unnecessary barriers. So, how can we all do better? Entrepreneurship thrives on connections, but what happens when the spaces meant to foster growth feel anything but welcoming? For many women entrepreneurs in the DMV, networking events meant to fuel success can feel more like closed circles than inclusive spaces. We recently heard from several female entrepreneurs in the DMV, and their feedback on local events has been eye-opening. One female founder shared, “I’ve seen an inherent ageism that happens to women…events are geared towards men and young people.” It’s a reminder that inclusivity is about ensuring all women, regardless of age or background, feel seen and valued. It’s crazy to think that even in events specifically meant for women, the feeling of being invisible persists… One founder said, “It is easy for female founders to go and then kind of get swallowed up, even in the events that are specifically for women” The fact that women can still feel invisible in spaces designed for them highlights the need for authentic inclusivity. At Unstuck Labs, we’re dedicated to changing the narrative. We believe that every woman deserves a space where her voice is heard and truly valued. We need to create environments where their ideas are celebrated, and her contributions lead the conversation. True inclusivity means creating spaces where everyone can be themselves, without having to fit into a specific mold! As we celebrate Women’s Week, it's time to push for real inclusivity with action!
