Last week our co-founder, Michael Youngblood turned 40. He created the most Unsettled birthday present ever. No, he didn't buy a flight to Unsettled's upcoming trips in Bali or The Windward Islands. He sat down and churned out a 25-page deck that captures his life at 40. It was a gift that required some work (don't the best ones?). Originally meant for an audience of one, he came to see that this is best shared. So in case this helps anyone get to work on articulating what's important to you today and in the coming decades, here it is: https://lnkd.in/e-Xgu_CK P.S. The best part about this thoughtful review from Valentina Moldovan? We meant every word in this message. The day after Christmas (Boxing Day) feels like the right day to say this again. So let's repeat it: Our culture is addicted to buying things we don't need. Our holidays revolve around it. There's a different way. Boxing Day was originally dedicated to charitable giving. In what ways can you be charitable today? Can you book a future volunteer opportunity or set a New Year's resolution to volunteer more in 2025? Can you ask a neighbor, friend, or relative if they can use help with anything? If you decide to go shopping, is there a local holiday market with artisan goods? Or can you opt-out and get out in nature with friends and family? The best "things" in life can't be bought. Here's to ending 2024 with charitable acts, kindness, locally produced goods, and quality experiences with great people. 🍻

I help non-profit organisations leverage LinkedIn organically to build strong communities

If last week I picked on desperate #newslettersubjectlines, #roboticmessages and #infobesity 😁, this week I want to do the opposite. I want to show you an example of a newsletter that inspired me. 💌 Subject line: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗪𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗕𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗨𝘀 …it immediately got my attention as I knew I didn’t unsubscribe from this sender: - “What’s going on there’? I thought 🤔 Then I went on to read the whole thing to find a beautiful message promoting #digitaldetox, #adventure over material things and the importance of taking time to reflect for #wellbeing and personal growth. Overall, it was a direct critique towards consumerism and Black Friday. This all comes from a hospitality company that specialises in #experiencedesign and #personaldevelopment retreats. Of course, they ended with a reference to their next available trip package. BUT, didn’t they do it in such a kind and human-centered way?🧍 Well done, Unsettled! 👏 As someone who loves outdoor activities and cares about sustainability, I found their approach very impactful, witty and inspiring. Anything you read recently that inspired you? Please share and let’s spread the love  💚 #CounterNarrative #StrategicCommunication #Human #Kindness ___________________________________________________________ 🧜♀️ I’m Valentina, a Digital Marketing and Communications Rebel 🔔Follow me for more posts about community building and connecting as Messy Humans in the era of AI

Some great insights and clarity from Renata Roth from her time on Unsettled: Baja, our first sea kayaking expedition earlier this month:

A Journey of Discovery: Lessons from the Wild 🛶😃🌵 What an experience!! I went into this kayaking / camping adventure with people I’ve never met before. My question to the guide: what I could do if I were left alone on an island. A week later, I’ve realized that I would probably have lasted just a few days 😂. The true lesson, though, wasn’t about surviving solo. It was about the power of teamwork. In both life and work, the real strength lies in how we come together, support each other, and combine our unique skills to achieve something greater than we could alone. Each person in this group brought something invaluable to the table - whether it was navigating through challenges, lending a helping hand, or offering a different perspective. I now see that the best way to tackle any challenge, whether on an island or in the workplace, is to surround yourself with good people, ask for help when you need it, and contribute with what you can. The strength of a team lies in its diversity and in the willingness of each person to play their part. In the end, we all made it through together - and we were better for it. Along the way, we had lessons, laughter, games, and more than a few moments of vulnerability. And the best part? No phones. We were all present, fully engaged with each other and the world around us. I came back from this trip with more than just memories (and a few mosquito bites) - I gained a deeper understanding of what it means to thrive in a team. I kayaked 35 miles, dove with sea lions, hiked through deserts, and camped on the most beautiful beaches. I saw dolphins, manta rays, turtles, and countless stars. And through it all, I realized that success isn’t about doing it alone - it’s about the people who help you grow, push your limits, and share the journey with you. Whether it’s in nature or in a professional setting, the most rewarding experiences come from collaboration, trust, and resilience. I think I’ve found my spiritual animal in all of that - one that thrives best in a group, with a little help from those around me. #teamwork #lifelessons #lifeskills #collaboration #travel #worklifebalance
