On the The Unofficial Shopify Podcast, I pitched a strategy for BFCM that I realize isn’t very well known. How to handle sold out products and let customers lock in your deals. You’ve got a ton of demand because you’ve got an amazing product and a killer discounting strategy for BFCM ?? ?? ?????????????? But then you run out faster than you expect and customers are frustrated Sure, you default to a waitlist people can join, but that doesn’t get you customer loyalty ??????? - Because buyers can't lock in the deal they found Because they can’t lock in your price, it doesn’t guarantee they come back to get your product when it’s in stock. As Kurt Elster put it, "I know there's no end to deals and the things I could spend money on, and my budget is finite". Customers are in a "find deals" mindset during BFCM, and you have to capture their fleeting attention. ?? ???????????????? Let customers partially pay or defer payment while locking in deals. As a merchant, if you know you’re getting more products in stock in a reasonable timeframe, why wouldn’t you presell more? We’ve got a ton of customers who’ve clued into this strategy and are locking in more sales and loyalty with deposits on backorders. It’s such an untapped opportunity. No money changing hands, but still more commitment than a waitlist.. Seeing it a lot for high value products where allowing split payment can make the sale.
