This week at Lied Library, we hosted Art of Politics: A Conversation with Cartoonist Mike Smith, celebrating his decades of editorial cartoons that have captured Nevada and U.S. political history. In 2021, Mike, along with Las Vegas Sun owner Brian Greenspun donated over 10,000 pieces of his work to UNLV Libraries Special Collections & Archives, establishing the Mike Smith Editorial Cartoons (MS-01047) archival collection. A huge thank you to Brian and Myra Greenspun for their support, Justin Hager for leading a great conversation with Mike, and Noah Price for curating Caricaturing the Candidates: The Mike Smith Editorial Cartoons, on display on the first floor of Lied Library. And of course, thank you to Mike for sharing his work, his views, and his story with us! This exhibit featuring presidential cartoons from Reagan to Biden is a must-see. Stop by and check it out!?

Have you noticed more students choosing topics about the entertainment industry for their research assignments? As Las Vegas grows as a hub for sports, film and television, and music, these relevant topics will pique students’ interest. Exploring how they relate to classroom concepts is an excellent way to help students make connections between disciplinary contexts and their everyday experiences. However, when researching these current or niche topics, finding scholarly sources can be challenging. In this lunch and learn, we will explore strategies for supporting students in conducting scholarly research on pop culture topics, from Arcane to Formula 1 and beyond. This workshop will most benefit faculty and?instructors. Lunch will be provided for registered participants.
