At just 27 years old, Layleen Polanco died alone in solitary confinement in Rikers Island prison. She suffered an epileptic seizure but, in the words of her sister Melania Brown, "the system killed her, like it kills so many Black people and other people of color." Today is #TransgenderDayOfRemembrance - today, we remember #LayleenPolanco and the 89% of incarcerated transgender people who have been held in solitary confinement in prison (2024 study by the Vera Institute of Justice).
