Lance Pérez, dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society. This honor recognizes his distinguished contributions to engineering, particularly in wireless communications research, academic leadership, and engineering education. He has been at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1996 and has secured more than $19.6 million in research funding. His work includes solving a longstanding problem in digital communications and developing AI-powered computer vision systems for monitoring livestock health. His leadership has driven record-breaking enrollment and research growth in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering, overseeing a $190 million facilities expansion, including the construction of Kiewit Hall. Beyond research and administration, Pérez has advanced STEM education through National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded initiatives and played a key role in Nebraska’s integration into the Big Ten Academic Alliance. His efforts to broaden participation in engineering have increased diversity in faculty and leadership. He will be honored as part of the 2024 AAAS fellow cohort in Washington, D.C., in June.
