The University of Nebraska Foundation announced Aug. 30 a record $388.8 million in new funds committed in fiscal year 2024 to support the University of Nebraska system. Gifts supported student access and success to grow Nebraska’s workforce; faculty, academic and clinical excellence to strengthen the educational experience; and transformational research and innovation to solve the state’s biggest challenges. “The support of our alumni and friends, together with the partnership of all Nebraskans, has put the University of Nebraska on an extraordinary trajectory. The Agricultural Internet of Things, or Ag-IoT, has grown rapidly in recent years, offering new innovations and improvements to farmers in Nebraska and beyond. The rapid growth, however, of the Ag-IoT field and deployment of new devices have left security risks unaddressed and devices and data vulnerable. University of Nebraska–Lincoln computer scientist Nirnimesh Ghose aims to develop solutions to enable smart, scalable and secure wireless operations in a modern farm setting. “It is very important for our national economy that we maintain the security of agricultural farms, and no one is more interested in it than we are, being an agricultural community,” Ghose said. https://lnkd.in/gpjy5jsv

Kasia Glowacka, assistant professor of biochemistry, pursues high-level lab analysis but also likes to study plants in the field. She wants her projects to have direct relevance for producers. She and scientists at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln have identified a promising approach to help crops cope with drought. By using genome modification to boost a key plant protein, the researchers enabled plants to reduce their water use by up to 30% under drought-mimic conditions. “This subject is so exciting,” she said. “It’s so close to the science application in producing better varieties of the crop. At the end, I want to make a difference in the real world that relates with every consumer and grower.” https://lnkd.in/gZrS2Uzp
