At the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, civic education and science education go hand in hand. UMCES graduate student Nina Santos is a 2024 USM Langenberg Legacy Fellow who is bringing science education into the community. #CivicLearningWeek At the UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, she and other researchers spoke with community members on how to think critically about science information shared in the media. The team also led a community art project focused on changes to the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. She said that the activity was design to help people “visualize changes that could happen in the Chesapeake Bay due to climate change, including the potential impacts on species that are iconic to the region.”

USM institutions address workforce shortage areas, awarding more than 12,000 STEM degrees, 4,000 health care degrees, and 1,500 teaching degrees in 2022.

USM faculty and staff continue to fuel research and discovery, attracting about $1.3 billion in external grants and contracts annually.

Educating for democracy is an essential part of the USM's mission to serve the people of Maryland! We're proud that 4 USM universities were named a 2023-2024 Voter Friendly Campus by the Fair Elections Center and NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education – Frostburg State University, Towson University, University of Baltimore, and University of Maryland Baltimore County. The University of Maryland has again earned a spot among the world's top academic institutions for turning research and discoveries into patents, according to a new?report?released Tuesday by the?National Academy of Inventors?(NAI). Together with other schools in the University System of Maryland (USM), the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) ranks eighth among U.S. public institutions—up one spot from the previous year—and 22nd in the world for patents awarded in 2024. According to the report, the?U.S. Patent and Trademark Office?last year granted a total of 114 patents to five USM institutions; of those, UMCP holds 71—up from 59 the year prior. "Patents empower universities to protect their innovations, foster collaboration, attract funding and turn research into real-world solutions, driving both academic advancement and economic impact,” said Ken Porter, the College Park executive director of UM Ventures. https://lnkd.in/ggE8fFcF

Tiger Pride Day 2025 in Annapolis - nearly 200 Towson University students joined our TU leaders at our state legislature for a successful day of advocacy and civil engagement. Thanks to our TU Student Government Association (SGA), and student affairs and university life team, for organizing a terrific day at our state capitol. Participatory democracy come alive when we participate in our democracy - needed now like never before. Go Tigers - great to have Tiger Pride.
