The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) is seeking commercial partners to help develop a new method for creating lightweight materials for applications in #aerospace, defense and marine industries. WARF is touting the method as a top licensing prospect in its engineering and #computerscience portfolio. It was created by Prof. Pavana Prabhakar, who leads the Manufacturing and Mechanics Lab within the UW-Madison College of Engineering. The approach is focused on producing a form of composite material called “syntactic” foam, which is made up of hollow particles combined with structures formed from metallic, ceramic or polymer components, according to an overview from WARF. Compared to comparable solid structures, these forms boast greater impact strength and toughness. After years of studying the deleterious effects of #climatechange on human #health, a #Wisconsin professor has come to view his work as less about devastation and more about hope. “The health benefits of a low-carbon #economy are so enormous.” Dr. Jonathan Patz recently told Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Wisconsin Today.” Fossil fuel #pollution caused more than 8 million premature deaths in 2018,?research shows. Patz also noted that unhealthy diets — particularly those high in red meat, the production of which?contributes significantly?to #globalwarming — and?lack of exercise?because of cities with poor walking and biking infrastructure contribute to many more premature deaths each year. “The climate discourse needs to recognize the centrality of health, and health should not be politicized. It is absolutely about our health today and the health of future generations,” Patz said. After 24 hours of #programming and #coding — fueled by plenty of snacks and energy drinks — the organizers of an annual hackathon event at the University of Wisconsin-Madison announced which of the 55 projects would move on as finalists. From noon Saturday to early Sunday afternoon, more than 250 people formed small groups to develop projects. Some stayed and worked through the night. Around 3 a.m., organizers held a little dance party. Participants huddled around laptops with BUBBL’R, Red Bulls, Oreos and Cheez-Its within reach. They presented their projects to faculty and other judges.
