Dr. Kimberly Diggle Mueller’s Cognitive-Communication in Aging and Neurogenic Disorders Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks to understand the neural mechanisms of speech and language in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) by analyzing naturalistic speech-language samples. The lab also explores the design and testing of identification methods of early cognitive change and the creation of multimodal therapeutic interventions to address cognitive-communication difficulties in the ADRD population. DID YOU KNOW? The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)[International Phonetic Association], crafted in the late 1800s by Paul Passy, A.J. Ellis, Daniel Jones, and Henry Sweet, is a standardized system of symbols designed to represent the sounds of spoken languages. It was first published in 1888 and refined over the years. IPA was created to help people pronounce words in any language by providing a unique symbol for each sound, or phoneme, in a language. We continue our PhD student spotlight with our fabulous Claudia Schabes (she/her). Claudia is a doctoral student in Dr. Audra Sterling’s Research in Developmental Disabilities and Language Laboratory at the Waisman Center. She received her B.S. in social work and M.S. in speech-language pathology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is currently completing her clinical fellowship. Claudia is interested in #language development in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, with a focus on #caregiver-child interactions and early intervention. #research #csd #communicationscience #comdis #clinicalresearch #speechpathology #science #slp #speechlanguagepathology #phd #badger #excellence #phdstudent #excellence

Last month, the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic provided #hearing healthcare in rural La Farge, Wisconsin to the Amish and Mennonite communities. This hearing clinic is part of Vernon Memorial Healthcare Hospital's nationally known Center for Special Children. Graduate student clinicians, supervised by audiologists Drs. Amy Hartman, Rachel Lee, Melanie Buhr-Lawler, worked alongside VMH staff to provide #care for community members of all ages! The Center for Special Children provides a service that is offered by only six clinics in the country which care for special children, primarily in the #Amish and #Mennonite communities. The clinics utilize genetic testing to identify and treat rare conditions. All clinics receive guidance from the communities that they serve. The program's goal is to continue to help those families affected by complex medical needs with affordable health care, while also building an expansive catalog of diseases that will improve diagnosis and treatment in the future. #uwmadison #badgers #healthcare #slp #audiology #comdis #communicationsciences #speechpathology #clinicalcare #outreach

Join us in congratulating Dr. CAROLINE NIZIOLEK, who was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure in our Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Niziolek is an outstanding researcher, educator, and community member, and the Biological Sciences Divisional Committee has unanimously approved her promotion last week. How does what we hear affect what we say? Dr. Niziolek’s research in the Brain, Language, & Acoustic Behavior (BLAB) Lab at the Waisman Center focuses on how the brain coordinates auditory and motor signals to achieve communicative goals by combining brain imaging during spoken language and acoustic analysis of speech behavior. Congratulations, Dr. Niziolek, we could not be prouder!! #associateprofessor #csd #speechpathology #slp #speechlanguagepathology #research #communicationsciences #uwmadison #badger #excellence #speechmotor #neuroscience

Go Teal for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month! Why teal? Teal is the Alzheimer’s Awareness color of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America?(AFA). Alzheimer's disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in the brain tissue of Auguste Deter who had died of an unusual illness. Her symptoms included memory loss, language problems, and unpredictable behavior. Today, an estimated 6.9 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's #dementia, and the numbers are projected to grow to almost 14 million by 2060. AD can also affect communication and swallowing. There is no cure for AD, but professors from our department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison collaborate with the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Institute, and the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention (https://wrap.wisc.edu) to improve the lives of people affected by this devastating diagnosis. Help us improve lives and build a future without Alzheimer’s disease. More information on AD can be found here: Alzheimer's Association?, Walk to End Alzheimer's-Chicago #alzheimersdisease #csd #speechpathology #slp #speechlanguagepathology #research #communicationsciences #uwmadison #badger #excellence #awareness #voice #communication #swallowing #afa
