Say hi to our doctoral student JOHN MUNDAY. John is a certified speech-language pathologist and doctoral student in the department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the mentorship of Dr. Katie Hustad at the Wisconsin Intelligibility, Speech, and Communication (WISC) Laboratory (https://lnkd.in/g7dQ3A47). He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Sacred Heart University and his master’s degree in communication sciences and disorders from Teachers College, Columbia University. John completed his clinical fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital specializing in assessment and treatment of communication disorders in children with #craniofacial conditions. Dr. Kimberly Diggle Mueller’s Cognitive-Communication in Aging and Neurogenic Disorders Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks to understand the neural mechanisms of speech and language in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) by analyzing naturalistic speech-language samples. The lab also explores the design and testing of identification methods of early cognitive change and the creation of multimodal therapeutic interventions to address cognitive-communication difficulties in the ADRD population. We continue our PhD student spotlight with our fabulous Claudia Schabes (she/her). Claudia is a doctoral student in Dr. Audra Sterling’s Research in Developmental Disabilities and Language Laboratory at the Waisman Center. She received her B.S. in social work and M.S. in speech-language pathology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is currently completing her clinical fellowship. Last month, the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic provided #hearing healthcare in rural La Farge, Wisconsin to the Amish and Mennonite communities. This hearing clinic is part of Vernon Memorial Healthcare Hospital's nationally known Center for Special Children. Graduate student clinicians, supervised by audiologists Drs. Amy Hartman, Rachel Lee, Melanie Buhr-Lawler, worked alongside VMH staff to provide #care for community members of all ages! The Center for Special Children provides a service that is offered by only six clinics in the country which care for special children, primarily in the #Amish and #Mennonite communities. The clinics utilize genetic testing to identify and treat rare conditions. All clinics receive guidance from the communities that they serve. The program's goal is to continue to help those families affected by complex medical needs with affordable health care, while also building an expansive catalog of diseases that will improve diagnosis and treatment in the future. #uwmadison #badgers #healthcare #slp #audiology #comdis #communicationsciences #speechpathology #clinicalcare #outreach

Join us in congratulating Dr. CAROLINE NIZIOLEK, who was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure in our Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Niziolek is an outstanding researcher, educator, and community member, and the Biological Sciences Divisional Committee has unanimously approved her promotion last week. How does what we hear affect what we say? Dr. Niziolek’s research in the Brain, Language, & Acoustic Behavior (BLAB) Lab at the Waisman Center focuses on how the brain coordinates auditory and motor signals to achieve communicative goals by combining brain imaging during spoken language and acoustic analysis of speech behavior. Denis is a PhD student in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and also at the UW ICTR (Institute for Clinical & Translational Research) studying towards a #JointPhD degree in Communication Disorders and in Clinical Investigation under the joint mentorship of Drs.
