"I chose to focus my faculty-led UW Study Abroad program on environmental and social resilience in Taiwan because it is a strong example of how societies can recover from environmental and social disasters. I thought it would be an interesting opportunity for UW students to see how a dynamic country like Taiwan has learned to cope with their unique environmental and social challenges." MEICHUN LIU, UW School of Art, Art History, and Design, received a Global Innovation Fund Award in 2023 to develop a study abroad program focused on design and international collaboration. Dr. Liu used the seed funding from the Global Innovation Fund to: ?? Conduct pre-program visits to Taiwan and Singapore, scouting locations and meeting potential collaboration partners, including visits to Shih Chien University, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan Design Research Institute, and the National University of Singapore; ?? Establish a new study abroad program, Design in Taiwan, for Early Fall 2024, which included 17 UW students traveling to Taipei, Taichung, Nantou, and Tainan; ?? Facilitate two design workshops with 21 local students from two universities in Taiwan, creating an immersive exchange of ideas and cultural experiences, and enhancing cross-cultural understanding and design education.
