Excited to connect with Professor Gregory Gerling and the Capstone Project team at?UVA’s Systems and Information Engineering Department last week in Charlottesville, VA! The team is supporting Fraud Red Team voice cloning research and helping expand our test playbook focused on the threats posed by adversarial AI tools —particularly synthetic voice creation software increasingly used by fraudsters and scammers to victimize both customers and companies. Their work is examining the effectiveness of commercially available AI tools and open-source tools. Through in-depth testing, the team is evaluating how well both humans and automated detection systems can identify and pick out cloned voices. The team is also evaluating the voice cloning effectiveness against different types of customers and testing different AI detection bypass techniques. By understanding how fraudsters exploit these tools, Fraud Red Team is developing new voice-based exploits and social engineering attack simulations to help financial institutions prepare for and defend against this emerging fraud threat. Leading a J-term course in Dubai with my colleagues June West and Emily Mellen, PhD with 28 outstanding UVA students has been an incredible experience—and it’s not over yet! Together, we’re diving into the culture of the UAE and collaborating with innovative global companies like Zbooni, INTEREL, and Baraya. The students are gaining firsthand insights by working directly with our partner clients and engaging with the region’s dynamic entrepreneurial landscape. Beyond the business perspective, we’re immersing ourselves in the UAE’s rich culture to better understand its people and their stories. Last night was especially memorable—we had the privilege of spending time with His Excellency Omran Sharaf (SEAS '05), Deputy Minister of Global Affairs, along with U.S. Ambassador Martina Strong and Consul General Robert Raines. Truly an unforgettable evening that brought together diplomacy, culture, and connection. Last week, I had the privilege of presenting two talks at the Society for Risk Analysis Annual Meeting in Austin, TX: ?? Risks of AI in Biotechnology: Addressing emerging challenges in AI-driven biotech applications. ?? Climate and Water Scarcity Risk in the MENA Region: Exploring data-driven strategies for addressing water scarcity impacts in climate-vulnerable areas. The meeting offered an enlightening and diverse program with engaging sessions and keynotes. A big thank you to the organizers, attendees, and colleagues who made this event so impactful. It is with great sadness that UVA Engineering shares the news that Bill Scherer, professor and chair of the Department of Systems and Information Engineering, passed away on Wednesday, October 30. For nearly four decades, Bill has been a foundational figure in our UVA Engineering community — a visionary leader, passionate educator, inspiring mentor and pioneering researcher who has left an indelible impact on students, colleagues and the field of systems engineering. Please join us in expressing our deepest condolences to Bill’s wife Amy and daughters Kendall, Merritt and Linden and honoring the contributions of this exceptional leader, teacher and friend.

Feeling incredibly honored to be among the fellowship awardees at last night’s reception!! Also thrilled to spot my photo with Dean West in her post—definitely one for the scrapbook! This year, I’ve been fortunate to receive four awards from National Science Foundation (NSF), UVA Engineering, and Systems Engineering UVa, for recognition of my research and teaching achievements. I'm deeply grateful for the encouragement throughout my PhD journey so far, which has been a transformative three years of growth, learning, and collaboration. Big shout-out to my fantastic advisor Laura Barnes! Looking forward to continuing this journey and contributing to the innovative work happening at our UVA Engineering Link Lab and University of Virginia Systems and Information Engineering!

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to showcase some of UVA Engineering's highlights to a group of researchers from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul who are exploring innovative teaching methods to enhance engineering education in Brazil. This experience prompted me to reflect on how fortunate I am to study here, reminding me of the many positive aspects of UVA Engineering that are often easy to overlook or take for granted.
