On Wednesday our CET 1010 students were visited by the Kwest Group’s Benjamin Geletka and Holly Szakovits. Ben and Holly shared with our students the many roles Kwest Group takes on in the construction industry - mainly serving as a horizontal contractor, developing sites at ground level and below. They also shared with our students how KWEST is integrating Al into project development to accelerate the design processes. Students can reach out to the Kwest Group for internship and co-op positions both locally and nationally. This week our students were greeted by Enrique Palacios, longtime friend of program director Dr. Luis Mata. Enrique is the Cost Engineer serving at Cenovus Energy’s Toledo Refinery and shared many insightful lessons with our students. He spoke about the steps taken during project development and the functions of a cost engineer. Enrique also discussed how a cost engineer fits into the work-breakdown-structure at most if not all companies. On Tuesday, students from our CET 2110 class visited Kuhlman Corporation concrete yard in Toledo. Students observed tests performed on a concrete batch and received a tour of the plant. Congratulations to all of the CET 2110 students who recently completed the ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade 1 exam! Our students applied their hands on learning experience with both the field tests and the written exam. Thank you to Sylvania Southview High School for welcoming our CET program director, Dr. Mata, and two of our current student advisors, Hunter and Brooke. We had a great time presenting information about our program to students of all grade levels looking for a start in the construction industry. Later in the day, we attended the SV Career Fair alongside other local companies looking for prospective students. While there, we spoke to students about the career opportunities that a degree in Construction Engineering Technology can present them with. Thank you to Sylvania Southview for the opportunity. Thank you to The Whitmer Construction Technology Center (CTC) for welcoming back alumna Lindsey Hollstein and Dr. Luis Mata, director of the Construction Engineering Technology department at The University of Toledo. Lindsey, a 2019 graduate of Whitmer CTC and recent graduate of UToledo, shared valuable insights with the senior class. She demonstrated to the students how her UToledo education has played a key role in her professional success. It was a pleasure introducing the CET program and the future opportunities available to the Whitmer CTC senior class. Andrew presented information about The Shelly Company to our first year students and highlighted key details about asphalt production. Last week the CET 1010 class welcomed 2019 CET graduate, Mike Vella of BMWC Constructors, back to the University of Toledo. Mike shared his knowledge of the industrial construction field and how his UToledo education has helped to propel him forward in his career. A couple weeks ago our first-year CET students welcomed Mike Livingston from the Rudolph Libbe Group into our class. Mike talked about the many large scale projects Rudolph Libbe has recently taken on and how a college education in CET helps students excel in those positions. Rudolph Libbe has also had a large impact on the construction of the UToledo campus, showing students how close they are to their work without even realizing it. Last week, the CET program welcomed back former program director, Dr. Nick Kissoff. Our first year students were able to meet Dr. Kissoff and learn more about his role as a Lucas County Engineer and the services provided by the Lucas County Engineers Office.
