INTERN SPOTLIGHT: Maurice Troy Peoples, Jr. will graduate in December with a master’s degree in social work from University of the Pacific, where he also earned his bachelor's degrees in psychology and philosophy. A proud #Stockton resident, he is deeply committed to giving back to his community, particularly by supporting youth. As a U.S. Air Force veteran, he also hopes to work with fellow veterans in the future.
"I've always been drawn to roles where I can support and advocate for individuals facing challenges," Maurice shares. "Social work provides the perfect platform for me to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives and contribute to a more just and compassionate society."
His passion for helping others led him to social work, a profession he sees as both a calling and a responsibility. "Witnessing the struggles and resilience of people in my community further motivated me," he explains. "I want to be part of the solution and help individuals navigate their circumstances with dignity and hope."
Through his practicum with San Joaquin Behavioral Health Services, Maurice has gained experience in assessments, care plans, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. He has also learned the significance of empathy, active listening, and building trust with clients. "Social work is about meeting people where they are and understanding their needs without judgment," he says.
As he continues his internship, Maurice hopes to deepen his skills in case management, therapeutic interventions, and advocacy. "Receiving feedback from experienced professionals will be key in shaping me into the best social worker I can be," he notes.
For those considering a career in social work, Maurice advises: "Be prepared for both the challenges and rewards of this profession. Social work requires dedication, empathy, and resilience, but the impact you can make is incredible. Explore different areas to find your passion, get hands-on experience, and stay committed to advocating for social justice and positive change."
