The UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute’s Second Annual Research Symposium is only two weeks away —-Tuesday, March 25, 2024, at the UT Conference Center. This exciting event will showcase the UT-Oak Ridge National Laboratory collaborative research funded by UT-ORII and the Science Alliance in FY24. The symposium will feature presentations from our FY 24-funded faculty members and several graduate students from the Bredesen Center. ?? Congratulations to Nadia Fomin and Fnu Suya, our 2025 Support for Affiliated Research Teams (StART) Award recipients! ?? Each UT Knoxville faculty member has been awarded $100,000 from the UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute’s Science Alliance to support groundbreaking research in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. ?? Fomin, a professor in Experimental Nuclear/Neutron Physics, is partnering with ORNL’s Joshua Pierce, a physicist and group leader in ORNL’s Neutron Scattering Division on “Pushing the Limits of Hydrogen Polarization for Interdisciplinary Applications.” ?The team plans to operate “a dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) characterization apparatus at UT to benchmark polarizable materials, standardize the preparation of such materials and develop techniques to maximize the nuclear polarization.” Suya, a professor in UT’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department, is working with Jinghui Yuan, a researcher in ORNL’s Applied Research for Mobility Systems group. Their project, entitled, “Towards Trustworthy Reinforcement Learning for Responsible Intelligent Transportation Systems,” aims to address security and privacy challenges in Deep Reinforcement Learning-based intelligent transportation systems The Science Alliance started the StART grant program in 2019 to stimulate the development of new UT-ORNL research. Since the program started, the Science Alliance has funded 15 new joint research projects, totaling more than $1.6 million. Distracted drivers cause more than 3,000 fatal car crashes each year in the U.S. UT-ORII research assistant professor Maged Shoman is leading an effort with researchers from UT Chattanooga to explore new ways of predicting and preventing distracted driving. Shoman's research is part of the work that's being done through UT-ORII's UT-ORNL Energy Storage and Transportation Convergent Research Initiative. UT-ORII strategically aligns the strengths of UT and ORNL to support collaborative research in emerging areas of strength for the combined institutions. Maged S.
