  • Thinking about using AI to help you land your dream job? According to a recent piece in the Financial Times, “it seems even AI companies are now exhausted by all the generic AI slop making its way into job applications” (that’s a reference to Anthropic, creator of Claude, telling candidates for its roles that they shouldn’t use AI). To help you make sense of this fast-moving topic, the Careers Centre has published guidance for students about using generative AI responsibly: https://lnkd.in/eQKRapJ5 We anticipate updating this pretty regularly throughout the year, as the facts change – so keep checking back.

The last session of our GEM Masterclasses was presented by the Wonderful Jill Wishart from IQVIA, facilitated by our lovely friends at the University of St Andrews Careers Centre. This session provided students with the opportunity to critically evaluate sustainability, regulatory compliance, and project oversight, while also tackling the unique challenges involved. Jill also shared her inspiring career journey and provided valuable perspectives on the different roles available. A fantastic session to wrap up our workshops. A big thank you to our employers for making these masterclasses possible, and to our students for showing up every week and actively engaging. • Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Anete Krūze and Vivek Panda from our sponsors Accenture UK & Ireland to help run our mock assessment centre as part of our Saints Skills Spotlight Award. They had quite a challenge of assessing our strong group of students throughout the afternoon. We started off with a group activity where the students were tasked to dive into their teamworking and problem solving skills to create innovative solutions to a fictional scenario. This was followed by individual interviews where each student had to evidence their transferable skills. It was a tough decision for our assessors to decide on the top performing student as everyone performed brilliantly! But we are happy to announce that Gregorio Ricci was chosen as the overall top performer of the assessment centre and was gifted with the prize of an Oculus Go VR Headset – generously sponsored by Accenture. Congratulations Gregorio! We are also happy to announce our incredible runner-up Hannah Betts who was gifted an Accenture tote bag and water bottle plus a gift voucher from the Careers Centre. Thanks to our sponsors again for sending such enthusiastic representatives to engage with the students and giving them an incredible experience. And thanks to all our participating students for giving our sponsors a challenging afternoon! Find out how you can get involved with the Spotlight Award: https://lnkd.in/eigU4M93.

  • The Careers Centre was thrilled to recently welcome four terrific alumni from Bank of America who hosted a Careers Insight Session! From sharing their personal experiences to offering practical advice, the session enabled our students to gain a unique perspective into the rewards of a career at Bank of America. ? Events like this are so beneficial to our students’ career exploration and will help to guide their next steps from the lecture theatre to the professional world. Sincere thanks to our class of 2024 alumni – your dedication to giving back and supporting the next generation is deeply appreciated. We look forward to welcoming you back to St Andrews soon! Yesterday, was the beginning of our SULSA - Scottish Universities Life Sciences Alliance Graduate Employability Masterclasses at the University of Dundee, with students from Abertay University Careers Service and the University of St Andrews Careers Centre joining us. It was a fantastic start to what is sure to be an outstanding program! The SULSA Masterclasses are designed to help our graduates make more informed decisions about their career paths. It aims to provide insight into the opportunities and challenges across different job sectors, highlight the variety of companies and organisations within the Life Sciences field, and assist them in crafting a more targeted CV and job application. A special thank you to our guest speakers: Ricardo Moreno Ballesteros, founder of GenProtex, and Fiona Dempsey & Scott Crichton from Medannex for dedicating their time to prepare and connect with our future graduates. We had a great turnout of enthusiastic and engaged students. We have another fantastic lineup this year, and I'm excited for next week’s session with guest speakers from Bond Biomedical and Catapult.

  • Last week, the Careers Centre hosted our USA Winter Break Careers Treks in New York City! These treks enabled students to visit the offices of leading organisations in the Financial Services and Consultancy sectors, chaperoned by the Careers Centre. ? During the treks, students were able to meet with professionals, learn about work-place culture and values, discover live and upcoming career opportunities/ internships and understand the skills and competencies they should hone as they prepare for their career journey.? ? Our students also participated in an alumni-student networking evening social, where we welcomed dozens of alumni and friends from the New York area to share advice with students and help to grow their professional networks. ? We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to the host organisations who made this year’s treks possible: Ernst & Young Bank of New York (BNY)?BNY Citadel Brunswick Group Leeds Equity Partners Five Rings Pencil or Ink ? If your organisation could support a careers trek during winter break 2026, or support our students' employability, we’d love to hear from you!?
