We are celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth by recognizing Dr. Matilda Evans, one of the first black female doctors, who paved the way for African American nursing education in South Carolina. In 1901, Dr. Evans founded Taylor Lane Hospital in Columbia, providing free health care to African American children and training to African American nurses and physicians. In 1914, when the hospital was lost to a fire, Dr. Evans continued her mission by opening St. Luke’s Hospital and Evans Sanitorium. By 1916, she helped found the Negro Health Association of South Carolina and launched The Negro Health Journal. Evans' efforts to provide African Americans with medical training helped create a lasting legacy of service and education for all. Thank you to South Caroliniana Library for helping us share her legacy. Learn more: bit.ly/4hZqJrL
