When his six-year-old son Teddy was diagnosed four years ago with the rare genetic disorder Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Class of 2000 alumnus Justin White knew just where to go: back to his college home at Rochester. University of Rochester Medical Center has been a pioneer in the study of treatments for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, conducting the first clinical trials in the nation for corticosteroids back in 1989. The Whites knew they needed to enroll Teddy in a trial quickly, so they chose to make the drive back-and-forth to Rochester from their home in Connecticut. Dad Justin has now decided to focus full-time on advocacy work for patients with Duchenne and is moving with his family back home to Rochester. Teddy completed the most recent phase of his trial this summer and was granted his wish to mark the occasion: a trip to the top of Rush Rhees Library tower. #wdad #wdad2024 #DuchenneAwarenessDay #WorldDuchenneAwarenessDay #URochesterResearch

Surgery can be scary for kids. Our teams worked to develop a surgery coloring book for pediatric patients to help relieve stress as they begin their appointments! A savvy nurse, Jeremy Mack, RN, updates the booklets and provides specific versions for Sawgrass Surgery Center, Golisano Children's Hospital, and Strong West. #AdvancesHappenHere

Colleagues know him as an esteemed leader and pioneer in his field. But Dr. Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro's journey -- through Mexico, Canada, and finally, Rochester, -- may be lesser known. His heritage and life experiences have helped him become renowned for his groundbreaking work in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, and have provided deep insights into healthcare disparities faced by Hispanic physicians and community members. As we celebrate and recognize #HispanicHeritageMonth, Dr. Hernandez shares his personal story and how his Hispanic heritage has shaped his approach to patient care and advocacy.

Several UR Medicine CPR instructors attended Sunday's Buffalo Bills game where the team presented the American Heart Association's Heartsaver Award to a local survivor and those who helped provide CPR. The Bills invited CPR instructors who have assisted with education throughout the year, which included our own URMC team members: Melissa Gleason, Jeff Walent, Kerri Klein, Emily Bruckel, Michael McDonald. Thank you to this group and all of our team members responsible for educating our community on this life-saving skill. Let’s continue to champion these vital skills that empower us all to make a difference!

Look up, #ROC! ?? Over the weekend, a 246-foot, free-standing tower crane was built outside of Strong. This crane will help bring our new patient tower to life, lifting key components into place and transforming the future of emergency care in our community. We’re reaching new heights! ???
