Overview
The University of North Carolina System is a multi-campus university dedicated to serving the state of North Carolina and its people through world-class teaching, research and scholarship, and outreach and service. More than 225,000 students are enrolled in the UNC System’s 16 university campuses across the state and the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the country’s first public, residential high school for gifted students.
The UNC System is one of the strongest and most successful systems of public higher education in the nation. It’s mission—to discover, create, transmit, and apply knowledge to address the needs of individuals and society—remains true to the University’s founding ideal of shared knowledge in a free society. In addition, the UNC System has a long-standing commitment to public service. The UNC Center for Public Television, the UNC Health Care System, the NC Arboretum, and other University affiliates and programs reap social and economic benefits for the citizens of the state.
System Office
The UNC System Office, located in Raleigh, houses the offices of the president and senior administrative staff for the University. This core administrative staff executes the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and provides Systemwide leadership and support in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, communications, strategy and policy, human resources, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates.

For nine years, the UNC Board of Governors has voted to keep tuition rates flat for resident undergraduates at all 16 UNC System universities, helping more North Carolinians graduate on time and with less debt. “A UNC System degree is not only affordable, but also a good investment,” said UNC System President Peter Hans. “Our universities exist to serve North Carolinians from every community, every experience and every corner of our state.” Average in-state tuition at 12 of the 16 universities in the UNC System is $4,553 per year. Dr. Heather Hulburt Norris, who has served as interim chancellor at Appalachian State University since April of 2024, was elected the university’s next chancellor today by the UNC Board of Governors. A first-generation college graduate, exceptional educator, and prolific researcher, Dr. Lamson has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to improving the lives of all North Carolinians. She played a key role in developing the world’s first medical family therapy doctoral program; established an integrated care program to study the physical, behavioral, and social needs of service members and their spouses; and currently serves as a senior fellow for the ECU Office of Innovation and Engagement. “Dr. Lamson is the embodiment of the engaged faculty member,” said UNC System President Peter Hans. “She has put her extensive scholarship into real-world practice to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians, while inspiring a generation of students to embrace public service. Brown and her husband Dennis made an estate gift of $4 million that will support 11 university funds, including scholarships for first-generation students, military student services, athletics facilities renovations, emergency funds, and more. ??
When WCU Chancellor Kelli R. Brown unveiled plans for a comprehensive fundraising campaign shortly after her arrival in 2019, she prioritized seeking philanthropic support for enhancements to the overall student experience, including academics, athletics, and community and global engagement. She and her husband Dennis recently made an estate gift of $4 million that will benefit 11 university funds. The Browns’ leadership gift will support endowments for scholarships for first-generation students, military student services, academic programming, student-athletes and athletics facilities, the marching band, and student success and emergency funds.
