As part of the state’s premier academic medical center, University of Missouri Health Care offers a full spectrum of care, ranging from primary care to highly specialized, multidisciplinary treatment for patients with the most severe illnesses and injuries. Peak Memorial Burn and Wound Center. University of Missouri Women’s and Children's Hospital is Missouri's only hospital dedicated to women and children. It is the largest pediatric health care facility in mid-Missouri. Ellis Fischel Cancer Center is Missouri’s only hospital dedicated solely to cancer care. Missouri Orthopaedic Institute is the newest and largest freestanding orthopaedic center in mid-Missouri. The Missouri Psychiatric Center offers short-term, intensive inpatient treatment services for adults, adolescents and children at our facility adjacent to University Hospital. At just 14 years old, Izzi has overcome more challenges than most her age. Born with spina bifida, her childhood was filled with surgeries and numerous hospital stays, making it difficult to just be a kid. After searching for the specialized care Izzi required, her family found the support they needed at MU Health Care. Our experts, including pediatric urologist Dr. Elizabeth Malm-Buatsi, came together to create a personalized care plan for Izzi. She would undergo a procedure that helped her regain her independence and experience childhood in ways she hadn’t been able to before. Her first new experience? Izzi finally got to spend the night at a friend’s house. “Every single time, we felt that our concerns were heard, and they were doing what they thought was best to take care of Izzi,” her mom, Becki, shared. After a successful procedure, Izzi is enjoying every moment of being a kid again. She’s become an advocate for inclusive and accessible playgrounds, competing in the Miss Amazing pageant and talking to lawmakers to ensure all children can play and be kids. We’re so grateful we’ve been able to be an integral part of Izzi’s journey and we can’t wait to see what else she’ll accomplish! ??
