For many students, scholarships are helpful, if not essential, to their access to a world-class education here at Mizzou. Donor generosity is transformative for many students, and may be the key to staying on track in their degree program and achieving their dreams. Let’s meet some of our scholarship recipients! (1) The generosity of donors helps Garrett Johnson and his sister, who is also a CHS student, reach their dreams within the health care field. “It means a lot to my mother and I to have any sort of financial assistance so more money can be diverted to my sister,” Garrett said. (2) Nazeema Begam Asad Khan plans to specialize in hospital operations, specifically surgical care, and she says that scholarships represent milestones throughout her education as well as the ongoing dedication of alumni to fostering student growth. (3) Mizzou Online student Ashley Harbison went back to school to earn her Master of Social Work, and though she may have more limited volunteer opportunities than in-person students, she’s working to give back in her community at a behavioral health agency as a substance use disorder counselor. (4) Ryan Chen’s parents are small-business owners who immigrated to the United States from China, and they work 13-hour days to provide for their family and offer education to their kids. Through scholarships, Ryan is able to focus more on school and his interests than his finances. (5) Emily Connally is a single mother to three children and works a full-time job alongside her commitments as a student. Receiving a scholarship helps her achieve a degree and eases her family’s financial burden, especially as she plans to continue her education after she completes her degree. (6) Kalista Sadler comes from a military family, and she wants to give back through military social work. “I knew I wanted to give back to the people who have helped my family and me,” she said. “Therefore, when I receive my degree, I want to work with the VA to give back and help veterans in need.” (7) Scholarships allow Shannon Gillespie, a senior respiratory therapy student, to focus on her studies and extracurricular goals, including raising $1,500 for pediatric cancer research with the Mizzou Morethan4 club. (8) “You are helping not just me, but my future patients as well,” says Addison Sircy. “With this scholarship, I can focus more on school to become the best social worker I can be.” If you’d like to empower College of Health Sciences students, consider giving to the scholarship fund of your choice this Mizzou Giving Day, from noon March 12 to noon March 13: https://loom.ly/ikxY4eo
