In 2015, the latest year for which reliable estimates are available, 15 million older Americans didn't have close family and most lived alone. Most lived alone. By 2060, that number is expected to swell to 21 million. In addition, millions of seniors who do have children don't live geographically close to them, or have complicated relationships, making asking for support difficult. These older adults turn to friends, neighbors, church, and other community members when they need help. Sarah Patterson says, "“We’re just beginning to do a better job of understanding that people have a multiplicity of connections outside their families that are essential to their well-being."

According to a new report from CDC, infant mortality remained steady from 2022 to 2023 and black infant mortality remains more than double than white infant mortality. Robin Jacob told ABC News, "I am not surprised; in particular infant mortality among Black women and infants is consistently higher than for white women, but I am disappointed that despite increased awareness and efforts to reduce the disparities, we are not seeing any progress in reducing the infant mortality rate among this population."

Please consider this philanthropic campaign for increasing the training and scholarship of social science. At the University of Michigan Survey Research Center we are hoping to start a new panel to broaden the types of questions that can be asked by University of Michigan researchers, but researchers more broadly as well. We have a MS and PhD program in Survey Methods and Data Science that train social science students in the cutting-edge methods that are important for science, industry, and government. These are just 2 of many programs and projects that are important for building the data and the people who work with that data in the future. Please contact Henry Jewell for any questions or to find out how you can support these endeavors and many more.
ISR is a global leader in the social sciences. This fall, we're launching a new philanthropic campaign to bolster and reimagine the global research ecosystem while continuing to drive major change in the social sciences. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eGGXHMvV
