This past week, SVF had the pleasure of engaging with the Ann Arbor entrepreneurial community. Thank you Ann Arbor SPARK for hosting our weekly education session. We heard about the organization's mission from Loren Townes Jr., MBA. Special thanks to Carly Toaz and Lauren de Vries for helping coordinate our visit! SVFers also had the amazing opportunity to learn about Business Models from Better Ventures' founding partner Wes Selke. As students, we truly value these discussions and the insightful conversations they bring. Wes's expertise will be essential in helping drive our sourcing and due diligence processes forward as the year progresses. Thank you to our VP of Education Dan Rosenfield for spearheading our efforts to further SVF's action-based curriculum. We appreciate the donation of food from the local Michigan vendor Avalon International Breads. We look forward to all that's to come!
关于我们
Launched in September 2009 by a group of MBA students, the University of Michigan Social Venture Fund (SVF) invests in and supports innovative companies that place social impact at the heart of their business model. SVF fosters the growth of enterprises responding to societal needs that traditional markets have insufficiently addressed. As the first student-run social venture fund in the country, SVF provides an unparalleled action-based learning experience, which places equal importance on maximizing financial returns and socially/environmentally-driven venture investing and entrepreneurship. The fund is housed within the Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at the Ross School of Business.

This past Friday, SVF kicked off our first-ever Detroit Impact Retreat. Our new class of Investment Associates brought our commitment to community-focused investing to life by spending a day in the Motor City. The trip was filled with education, team-building, and insights from Detroit's venture capital ecosystem leaders. A big thank you to the Urban Tech Xchange for hosting us during the first half of the morning. We had meaningful discussions on the importance of sourcing and screening through an intersectional lens in the VC industry. Our panelists also provided valuable insights on investing in Detroit. We appreciate their time and expertise! Lindsey Kilbride from Detroit Venture Partners Drew Mcusic from Chloe Capital Jeff Ponders II from ID Ventures In the afternoon, we gathered at the University of Michigan Detroit Center, where we delved into SVF's theory of change. We also had the opportunity to hear from a panel of Detroit founders we connected with through TechTown Detroit. We gained incredible insights from: Jessie Feliz from Spanish S.W.A.G. Darrell Marshall from Total Analysis USA Brittany M. from OptimizeEV Dr. Cleamon Moorer, Jr. from Eye Care For Detroit, Inc. We’re thrilled to kick off the year with SVF and deepen our connections with the Michigan community. ?? Exciting News! ?? The Social Venture Fund is thrilled to announce that we have closed deals with MediCircle and The Crop Project thank you to all our fund members for their work this past year! ? ?? MediCircle collects donated meds from patients, then recertifies and redistributes high-value specialty medication at no cost to the donor or recipient. This helps make life-saving drugs more accessible and affordable in the United States. ??The Crop Project is a next-generation ingredient supplier devoted to leveraging kelp as a salt alternative. The Crop Project’s kelp salt substitutes provide a zero-input, nutrient-dense, carbon-neutral alternative to salt. It reduces sodium, has numerous environmental benefits, and helps coastal marine farmers adapt to changing climates. This year SVF welcomed 31 new associates including 22 MBA/Dual Degree students, 4 BBAs, and 5 Law Students. Throughout the Fall our associates screened 110 companies for our four investment circles: Climate, Education, Health, and Community Development in addition to completing onboarding education sessions. ? Fund members also interacted with our portfolio companies by engaging in three Portfolio Consulting projects. Additionally, members of the fund worked on three research projects with the objective of continual improvement for future members.? Thank you to our advisors and alumni for your continued guidance and support. Together, let's build a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world through the power of investing. ???? #ImpactInvesting #VC #Sustainability #SocialImpact #Entrepreneurship
