Congratulations to Catherine Smith from the UM Health-West Lowell Health Center, who has been recognized with the DAISY Award for compassionate nursing care. A patient nominated Catherine and said she provided a safe and supportive environment during a vulnerable time, going above and beyond to ensure the patient's identity was respected and concerns were thoroughly addressed. From using the patient’s preferred name and pronouns to offering guidance, Catherine made the patient feel seen, valued and supported.

"Lung cancer really has a bad reputation that the long-term survival is not great," said Dr. Elizabeth Colwell - a Cancer Network of West Michigan thoracic surgeon. "That's really because we're catching it late.” Lung cancer is often asymptomatic but catching it early through screening increases the chances of it being curable. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, but only 13% of those eligible are screened. If you’re high-risk—over 50 and currently smoke, have smoked heavily, or quit within the last 15 years—ask your doctor about a non-invasive CT scan. The Cancer Network of West Michigan, a partnership between Trinity Health and UM Health-West, is taking part in National Lung Cancer Screening Day on Saturday, Nov. 9. This Sunday don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour as daylight saving time ends. Although “falling back” isn't as jarring as the spring time change, it can still impact your health. “Abrupt changes in sleep schedules can reduce sleep quality, affecting mood, energy, and alertness,” shares Dr. Aubrey Kuehnel, UM Health-West sleep medicine physician. https://bit.ly/3YNeCau
