?? We're still brimming with excitement after the success of last week's High School Programming Competition! The competition was fierce among the 52 (!!!) attending teams. A total of 156 students gathered in the Riverfront Conference Center to tackle novice- and expert-level programming challenges, guided by eight coaches who also attended a continuing education workshop. Participating schools included GCI, Northville, Pioneer, KAMSC, St. Clair TEC, Grand Blanc, and Portage Central. ?? We want to thank our generous sponsors, Consumers Energy and Coretek. ?? We had the privilege this week of welcoming Automation Alley to our campus for a thought-provoking event: “Smart & Secure Manufacturing: Safeguarding the Future of Advanced Production.” Attendees enjoyed an illuminating panel discussion on smart manufacturing with Edward Kim, Professor Tim Bates, and Khalid Malik. The trio touched on several topics, including vulnerabilities in cybersecurity systems, how to evaluate viable startups in the industry, and the emerging tech that will ultimately push manufacturing forward—robotics, automation, blockchain, AI, IoT, and more. They also broke down their unique approaches to educating tomorrow’s workforce in their respective classrooms. Over the course of the talk, one thing became abundantly clear: we must equip our students with the critical thinking skills necessary to synthesize data from an increasingly complex suite of technologies. We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership between UM-Flint's Center for Cybersecurity and NetSTAR, one of the world's leading providers of web-filtering solutions. Under the leadership of Khalid Malik and Yasuaki Arakawa, NetSTAR's CTO, this innovative collaboration aims to develop advanced AI technologies to enhance internet safety—particularly for vulnerable populations like children and the elderly—and boost productivity in educational and work settings by blocking harmful content. The partnership was unveiled at a special ceremony during last month's Symposium on Cybersecurity Horizons. The project will focus on using neuro-symbolic AI for real-time detection and categorization of malicious websites, addressing significant challenges such as encrypted DNS requests and fast-evolving website content. By striking a balance between internet safety and privacy, this initiative aims to make a substantial impact on global cybersecurity efforts.
