The state of the University of Maine System (UMS) is STRONG and innovative, despite the considerable uncertainty we are facing. That was Chancellor Malloy's message to a Joint Convention of the Maine Legislature this week. In his first in-person address to the full Legislature since becoming Chancellor in 2019, Malloy shared that his personal experience overcoming severe learning and physical disabilities impressed upon him the importance of public education and meeting students where they are. And that's just what we're doing. He also highlighted that Maine's public universities: ??Lead the region in student affordability ??Achieved their highest retention rate this fall ?? Have increased enrollment for four consecutive semesters ????Are serving more students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees than ever ??Directly admit promising Maine high school students ??Now guarantee admission to graduates of Maine's community colleges ??Have expanded early college and online offerings, with more than 200 fully online degree programs and plans to double that by 2028 ????Drive economic growth and innovation, including through the R1 University of Maine ??Are collaborating to better meet the needs of students and the state ??And have a heck of a D1 men's hockey team (Go Blue!) The University of Maine System (UMS) is the state’s largest driver of educational attainment and economic development. In the past two decades, the System has awarded 106,362 degrees and spurred and strengthened thousands of small Maine businesses through world-class research and development. Established in 1968, UMS unites the state’s distinctive public universities including the R1 University of Maine and its regional campus the University of Maine at Machias, the University of Maine at Augusta, the University of Maine at Farmington, the University of Maine at Fort Kent, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the University of Southern Maine and the University of Maine School of Law, as well as the University of Maine Graduate and Professional Center. The System serves more than 30,000 students annually and its tripartite education, research and service mission is made possible by the efforts of some 5,000 faculty and staff. Despite demographic declines in the state and region, over the last five years the System has increased the number of high school students annually earning free university credit by 32%, rapidly expanded high-quality online education, grown graduate enrollment by 22%, and launched innovative adult degree completion initiatives to advance economic mobility and meet state workforce needs. Maine’s public universities continue to be a national leader in advancing college affordability and access and reducing student debt. Listed in-state tuition and fees at UMaine are the lowest of any New England flagship and Pell-eligible Maine students can attend four of the System’s small universities without paying out-of-pocket for tuition and fees.

After its biggest fall enrollment since 2021 and the best return rate in its history, the University of Maine System (UMS) is seeing another semester of student growth. “Semester after semester, Maine’s public universities are recruiting and retaining more students. That’s great news for the upward mobility of those students and their families and for the growth of Maine’s workforce and economy,” said Chancellor Dannel Malloy. “Our enrollment increases are especially impressive given the demographic challenges of Maine and New England and demonstrate that our innovations in access and affordability, academic programming and student success are paying off for our System and this state.” Maine's public universities have now increased enrollment year-over-year in four consecutive semesters and are serving more students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees than ever before. The growth is driven by admission innovations, retention improvements and an influx of transfer students. ?? This is BIG! Our System’s flagship and Maine’s land, sea and space grant institution has again been recognized as one of our nation’s top research universities. “The affirmation of the University of Maine's well-deserved R1 designation should be a point of pride for all Mainers, who benefit from having a world-class research university right in their own backyard,” said University of Maine System (UMS) Chancellor Dannel Malloy. “This milestone sends a strong message to the world about Maine's excellence." Since first achieving R1 in 2022, the University of Maine has attracted record levels of talent and investment and accelerated student opportunity and Maine's economy and global competitiveness. And what’s more? The University of Southern Maine has been named as one of only 218 institutions in a new Carnegie Classification category intended to celebrate universities that engage in meaningful research activity but have historically gone unrecognized. Congratulations to UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy, USM President Jacqueline Edmondson, and the high-performing UMaine and USM faculty, staff, and student researchers who are delivering solutions to our state and well beyond. Maine couldn't be prouder!
