The University of Houston College of Pharmacy (UHCOP) combines the opportunities and experiences of the Texas Medical Center’s world-class healthcare community with resources of the University of Houston, a Tier One public research university, to offer its students the best possible education. The College is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. In 2017, UHCOP began occupation of its new state-of-the-art home in Health 2, a nine-story, 300,000-square-foot facility on the UH Campus. The College offers a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) professional degree, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmaceutical Sciences with Concentrations in Clinical & Translational Research, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Health Outcomes and Policy (PHOP), Pharmaceutics or Pharmacology. The college also offers a consecutive Pharm.D.+Ph.D.; Pharm.D./MBA dual degree; and a PHOP Ph.D./M.A. in Applied Economics dual degree. The college also offers post-doctoral fellowship and residency programs in cooperation with institutions, including a concurrent two-year M.S. in Pharmacy Leadership & Administration/PGY1-PGY2 in health-system pharmacy administration in collaboration with seven health systems. The College aspires to foster a commitment to lifelong learning and an environment where students develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills consistent with the high standards of their profession and/or scientific field. Our diverse, award-wining faculty includes co-inventors of U.S. and international patents and National Institutes of Health-funded investigators. Year after year, our alumni and students are recognized at the state, regional and national level in the areas of patient care, community outreach, professional leadership and/or research.

Backed by a two-year, $390,000 grant from the The National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), UHCOP's Radbod Darabi, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pharmacology, is investigating how stem cells communicate with each other during muscle regeneration as well as how multicellular stem cell-based therapeutics can be designed for skeletal muscle disorders. Dr. Darabi’s efforts are focused on using reprogrammed cells known as human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) to bolster the therapeutic efficiency of these cells and enhance muscle regeneration in patients suffering from muscle injury or dystrophy. https://lnkd.in/gNabjKiA

Because disease severity can vary greatly due to the uniqueness of the microorganisms and associated DNA that inhabit each person’s gut, new research into the gut microbiome is shedding light on its potential predictive value when assessing CDI severity in patients. Backed by a one-year, $40,000 grant from the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP), UHCOP Research Assistant Professor Taryn Eubank, Pharm.D., BCIDP, is investigating whether Enterococcus colonization during CDI impacts disease severity in hospitalized patients. https://lnkd.in/gVNwX-XC
