The Molecular and Cellular Oncology Program (MCO) at the CU Cancer Center hosted the 2024 Colorado Genome Regulation Meeting, an event that provided an opportunity to share data and ideas about gene regulation and chromatin. The attendees consisted of faculty and trainees from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Colorado Denver, Colorado State University, and National Jewish Health. “The research presented ranged from basic structural biology to people who study gene regulation in cancer and heart disease,” says Patricia Ernst, PhD, CU Cancer Center member and co-leader of the MCO. Former Denver Nuggets star and dedicated humanitarian Dikembe Mutombo died October 1 from brain cancer. He was 58 years old. While details of Mutombo’s diagnosis and treatment were never disclosed, we spoke with CU Cancer Center member Ryan Ormond, MD, PhD, about how brain tumors are typically diagnosed and treated. "Depending on the tumor type and imaging characteristics and the patient’s exam and functional status, they may undergo a biopsy or surgery and then often need additional therapies like chemotherapy or radiation," says Ormond. October is when many wear pink for #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth. With breast cancer being the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the U.S. awareness is still very much needed, especially when it comes to screening. The earlier breast cancer is found the better the prognosis. Learn more about breast cancer on our website here: https://lnkd.in/gGzReHqM #BreastCancerAwareness #BreastCancer
