As we welcome students this fall to the UCF College of Sciences, I'm reflecting on the recent celebrations for our graduating master's and doctoral students this summer. It's wonderful to have these moments to mark our Knights achieving excellence in their respective disciplines. “I hope more people pay greater attention to the value of coastal marine resources and see the value in conserving, restoring, and protecting them,” said Luciana Banquero. Banquero, a graduate student studying marine science in UCF's Biology department in the College of Sciences, shares her hopes for marine science upon winning the notable Aylesworth Scholarship from Florida Sea Grant. Just a few students are selected among undergraduate and graduate student applicants across all Florida universities that conduct research in the marine sciences. Nicholson School of Communication and Media journalism students attended the NAHJ (National Association of Hispanic Journalists) Conference this past week with faculty sponsor Katie Coronado. We are unraveling mysteries at the College of Sciences. Assistant Professor Robert Fitak recently compiled a database of animal DNA showing the presence of various types of magnetic bacteria, which can play a role in migration patterns. Why does measuring magnetic bacteria matter? According to University of Central Florida's Fitak, "If we have a better understanding of how animals navigate, it will be useful for conserving endangered or protected species."

Could metal nanoparticles acting as an artificial enzyme lead to better medical diagnostics? UCF College of Sciences Xiaohu Xia is hoping to answer that question and improve patient outcomes. Full video on our YouTube Channel https://lnkd.in/d37hT6sX
