Last month, Dr. Alvaro Durand-Morat gave an invited presentation about the economic importance of rice quality, highlighting many of the research findings conducted with Dr. Nalley on the valuation of rice quality in many countries such as Colombia, Haiti, and Ghana at the Central American Rice Conference in Honduras. Last week I was thrilled to present a shortened version of my dissertation proposal to my fellow Farm Foundation Agricultural Scholars, as well as a few USDA ERS economists at our Capstone Presentations. We also were able to visit with representatives of both the Senate and House of Representatives Agricultural Committees, and speak with the absolute powerhouse that is USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics (REE) Sanah Baig. We also wrapped up our trip by participating in the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) - Agricultural Statistics Board and World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates Briefing. Participating in this program has been absolutely amazing, and I can't thank the Farm Foundation enough for the opportunity to engage with so many experts, producers, academics, and fellow graduate students over the past 9 months. Thank you, especially to Jenna Wicks for guiding us both physically and mentally throughout this process, as well as Morgan Craven, Amanda L. Martin, Martha King, MBA, SHRM-SCP, Shari Rogge-Fidler, Timothy Brennan, Katie Merkle, and the entire FF team for their support during this time. I am also so grateful for the conversations I've had with my ERS mentor, Ashley Spalding, Gregory York who guided us in DC and during several other events, and Dr. Spiro Stefanou who was with us in Scotland and DC. Finally, thank you to all my wonderful Ag Scholars this year. I have learned something from each and every one of you, and I cannot wait to see your success in the coming years!

There is no shortage of challenges for the food system. From changes in policy to new food technologies, consumers and producers can have a lot to worry about. To consumer economics researcher Brandon McFadden, though, these challenges present opportunities to better understand human interactions with the food system.
